1053 Nettie, who came to the US at age 14, was good at math and had wonderful, thick hair, said her daughter, Ruth. "She was a good seemstress and knitter." Back in Russia, she knitted two pairs of booties for her German Shepherd, "Tzigane," which meant Gypsy in Yiddish or Russian. The dog went out with the booties, and came back without them. "My mother never forgot that," Ruth said.

Nettie was part of the Scheiner clan "tho her last name was Pollakoff," said Ruth. Her half-sister, Kayla, married a Scheiner. And "Abe's family (Nettie's in-laws) knew the Scheiner family in Europe, and when they came here, they lived near each other."

Nettie lived on Ludlow in Manhattan when she first arrived. She worked as a hat-maker and went to high school at night, Ruth said.

From Nettie's niece, Marcelle Pollakoff London: "How we got to Pollakoff from Polliankofsky is that there was a cousin named Max Pollakoff who took (Nettie's brother) Izzy off the boat when he came to America under the name Pollakoff."

1065 Notes from Jane Perry:

ALEXANDER SCOTT TIDBALL (1796-1848) was the son of Joseph Tidball and Jane Scott. Joseph Tidball immigrated to this country from Wales and settled in Philadelphia, Pa. Later, with his wife, he moved to
Winchester in Frederick Co., Virginia, and there he prospered greatly. At one time he owned most of the land upon which the town of Winchester now stands. No less than fifteen full pages of the Index of Deeds in the Clerk's Office in Winchester are filled with the real estate transactions of this family and they cover
only those which took place prior to 1838.

He and his brother, Thomas Allen Tidball, who served as Clerk and Deputy Clerk of the Court for Frederick County for 52 years, purchased from their father "Hawthorne", originally part of the "Glen Burnie" plantation, Alexander Scott Tidball later selling his interest to his brother who lived at "Hawthorne" from 1813 until his death in 1856.

Mr. Tidball studied law and was admitted to the bar. He engaged in the practice of his profession and in various other business activities. About 1820 he married Millicent McGuire I born at "Grove Farm," Frederick County, Va. in 1798), daughter of Edward and Elizabeth Holmes McGuire and aunt of Dr. Hunter McGuire,
Medical Director of "Stonewall" Jackson's Corps in the Army of Northern Virginia.

Alexander Scott Tidball lived on Water Street in Winchester. His home was later owned by Dr. Boyd. The children of Alexander Scott and Millicent McGuire Tidball were: Jane Scott, Elizabeth Holmes, Lucy Page, Mary, Edward McGuire (the first born). Frank and Alfred. Alexander Scott Tidball died in Winchester and
is buried there. His brother Josiah Tidball then living in Fauquier Co., Va. married Lucy G. Page, daughter of Mann Page III of "Mannsfield" and Mary Tayloe, his wife. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Mr. Hill and took place at "Prospect Hill" in Clarke Co. on Thursday, January 31, 1836.
TIDBALL, Alexander Scott (I3941)

1066 Notes on Robert Coles House: The original home of Robert Coles is standing today as the east wing of the residence at 34 The Place. This tiny wing of the present dwelling is quite dwarfed by the more pretentious wings that have been added by subsequent residents. It is the oldest place of residence now standing in Glen Cove. until the spring of 1945 there stood a large and much weather-beaten black locust (Robina pseudocacia), in front of the house. This ancient tree was one of several brought to Long Island by Captain John Sands of Cow Neck shortly after the settlement of Musketa Cove. This was probably the first introduction of that species of locust to Long Island, although today it is very plentiful along the north shore.

From Geneologies of the Cole Family:

William F Stone, Jr
September 11, 1929 - August 22, 2009
Well Known Peninsula Artist

Pacific Grove - William Stone, Jr., 79, known to his friends and family as Bill, a longtime resident, passed away on August 22, 2009 after a 40-year battle with cancer.

Bill was born on September 11, 1929, in Walnut Grove, CA. He attended UC Berkeley, then the school of Medical Illustration in Boston, where he met his future wife, Nancy Evans.

He then went on to get his teaching credentials. He was a well-loved art teacher at Blackford High School in Campbell before moving to the Monterey Peninsula in 1965. There he started a long teaching career at Carmel High School. Many of his art students have attributed their professional careers to their favorite art teacher and remained in contact with Bill well after graduating from his class.

Bill was very well known in the art community of Carmel and was referred by many as “Mr. Carmel.” He sat as president of the Carmel Art Association for many terms. The shows of his very unique watercolor style had become synonymous with his name. He will be missed greatly among the art community as well as by his friends and family.

William gave his entire life to his love of art, family and friends. He was a very charismatic person who always lit up the room or event he was attending. Always a volunteer, he gave his time to others, never asking anything in return. Bill was an active lifetime member of the Presbyterian Church and devoted much of his life to his faith and support of his church, along with his wife, Nancy.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Nancy; his three children, David Stone (Laura), Laurie Rogers, and Jennifer Conrad (Mathias); his brother, Robert Stone of Sacramento; his sister Carol Kern of Marysville; nine grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

William can rest in peace knowing his artistic style will never be duplicated, or the man known as “Mr. Carmel” will never be replaced. His talents are very present in his children and grandchildren as they are all very artistic in many different ways. Rest in peace Bill, you will be missed.

A private family memorial was held in Aptos near the family farm.

A celebration of Bill’s Life will be held on Wednesday, September 30, 2009 at the Carmel Art Association between the hours of 4:30 and 7:00 pm for everyone touched by this very special man.

1083 Obituary 2 Apr 2004 Baltimore Sun:

Eleanor Dosh

Eleanor Trapnell Hilleary Dorsey Dosh, 91, of Catonsville and Epping Forest, died of heart failure March 31 at Bon Secours Hospital in Baltimore.

Mrs. Dosh, who was known as "Polly," was born in Montclair, N.J., the daughter of Joseph Trapnell Jr. and Laura Virginia Kennedy. She was a member of one of the First Families of Virginia, and was a descendant of Elizabeth Marshall, sister of Chief Justice John Marshall (1755-1835).

She attended St. Mary's Junior College in Raleigh, N.C., and graduated from Hollins College. In 1936 she was included in the executive training class at the former Hutzler's department store and was in charge of the telephone home shopping service.

In 1941 she resigned to marry John Alexander Hilleary of a colonial Prince George's County family. That marriage ended in divorce.

In 1950, she became a supervisor with Rice's Bakery in Baltimore, where she managed 23 bake shops and supervised 125 sales persons.

In April 1963 she married Hammond P. Dorsey of Jacksonville, Fla. In June of that year Mr. Dorsey died suddenly while working on his uncle's 1,000-acre farm, Oak Hill, in what is now Columbia in Howard County.

In 1965 Mrs. Dosh was hired as a social worker in old age assistance in Howard County, retiring in 1974. She then obtained a real estate license and worked as an associate with the former Henderson Realty Co. in Catonsville.

After being a widow for 13 years, she married Dr. Stanley Hyde Dosh, a professor at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry for 39 years. He died in 1989.

Mrs. Dosh enjoyed bridge and travel to Europe via cruise ships, and to Panama and Bermuda. An ardent environmentalist, she granted an easement on the 23-acre Dorsey property adjacent to the Baltimore National Cemetery to the Maryland Environmental Trust in 1994.

She was a lifelong member of the National Society Colonial Dames 17th Century, the Daughters of the American Revolution Soldier's Delight Chapter and the Jefferson County Historical Society and the Catonsville Woman's Club.

Surviving are two sons, John Thornton Hilleary and Scott Trapnell Hilleary of Catonsville and Gerrardstown, W.Va.

1098 On Aug. 26, 1884, the day Abraham Sheinaus and Fannie Orel married in Tiraspol, this is what happened, according to Abraham's written recollections many years later:

"The wedding ceremonies took place in the open air in front of the Sinagogue at sun set. And the supper was served in a big place hired for that purpose. After the celebration & dancing, each one left for their quarters, and I was taken to the bride's home into a large room with old broken furniture and 2 beds, one for me and one for the bride. And because we were not allowed as yet to live together, a third sleeping place was prepared on the floor for Eva Hershfield, a girl of about 9 or 10 years to act as a guard."

1099 On Dec. 24, 1922, Marcia was not quite 6 months, and sick with a cough, when she left Petrovitchi for Moscow with her parents and brother Isaac, who was about 3.

They left by a hired horse and buggy and went to the Pochinok Station, according to written recollections of Marcia's father, Judah (Jack) Asimov, and according to a 1992 letter from Judah's first cousin, Olga Asimova. The family traveled to Liverpool and boarded the USS Baltic, which landed at Ellis Island in Feb. 1923.

Jack's memoirs say the family arrived on Feb 3 and were allowed to leave the ship on Feb 7.
The records from ellisisland.org, which has the original ship's manifest, say they arrived on Feb. 13, 1923.

The manifest of the Baltic lists the family this way: Juda, Hana Rochel, Aisik & Manis Asimy. It says they are from Petrowitschi.

https://tinyurl.com/35tsy2sn (Baltic’s passenger list)
Arrived on Feb. 3, 1923, and, according to Judah’s written memories, it took them four days to get off the ship. They entered NY on Feb. 7, 1923. (I am writing this on Feb. 7, 2023. (!) )
The electronic record of the passenger list has the wrong date of Feb. 13. But the actual passenger list shows that it’s Feb. 3. Also, 1923 isn’t clearly typed. But Judahs’ written memoir says they landed in 1923.

Here's a bit about the ship:

BALTIC 1903
The BALTIC was a 23,876 gross ton ship built in 1903 by Harland & Wolff, Belfast for the White Star Line. Her details were - length 709.2ft x beam 75.6ft, two funnels, four masts, twin screw and a speed of 17 knots. There was accommodation for 425-1st, 450-2nd and 2,000-3rd class passengers. Launched on 21st Nov.1903, she sailed from Liverpool on her maiden voyage to New York on 29th Jun.1904. In 1909 she rescued survivors of the collision between the REPUBLIC and the FLORIDA off the US coast, in which the REPUBLIC sank. On 12th Dec.1918 she commenced her first voyage after the Armistice, from Liverpool to New York and in 1927 her accommodation was altered to carry 393-cabin class, 339-tourist class and 1,150-3rd class passengers. On 17th Sep.1932 she commenced her last voyage from Liverpool to New York and Liverpool and on 17th Feb.1933 sailed for Osaka, Japan where she was scrapped.
