August 10, 1871: Nathaniel Garland deeded his son William H. Garland and his daughter-in-law Anna M. Garland ten (10) acres adjoining his in Albemarle County, Virginia. The acreage was made up of two tracts one of which was seven (7) acres upon which William resided plus another three (3) acres adjoining Nathaniel. June 3, 1880: William H. Garland shown as a 51 (1829-Virginia) year old farmer living in the Samuel Miller District, Albemarle County, Virginia. With him was his wife Annie M. Garland, age 53 (1827-Virginia) who was described as an invalid. Also in the home was son William Garland, age 21 (1859-Virginia); son Nathaniel Garland, age 22 (1858-Virginia) who was a merchant; daughter Molly S. Garland, age 18 (1862-Virginia) who was a school teacher; and son Ashby T. Garland, age 16 (1864-Virginia) who was a clerk in a store. June 6, 1900: N. Garland shown as a 43 (February 1857-Virginia) year old farmer living in North Garden Precinct, Samuel Miller Township, Albemarle County, Virginia. with him was his wife D.M. Garland, age 28 (1872-Virginia). They had been married for two years. She had no children. With them was A.C. Shepherd, age 70 male ((1830-Virginia); and A.M. Garland (female) age 74 (1826-Virginia). A.M. Garlnd was a widow and had 6 children/four alive and married 50 years. Living with her was a possible brother A.J. Shepherd, male, age 70, single. At One Time She Conducted a School for Girls
News reached the city yesterday afternoon of the death of Mrs. Anna M. Garland, wife of the late William H. Garland, at the home of her son Mr. Nathaniel Garland of Defoe, Va.
Mrs. Garland's death will be a shock to many of the oldest residents of the city and county who were her pupils at a school for girls which she conducted for many years at Garland's Store, a village just east of North Garden. The deceased was a woman of wonderful ability and intellect and had devoted the greater portion of her life to teaching.
She was in her eighty-sixth year and is survived by three children, Mrs. W.L. Maupin of this city, Mrs. Molly Viele of New York and Mr. Nathaniel Garland of Defoe.
The funeral will be held tomorrow from Hardware church.
