Late 1850's: John Calhoun Garland and Nancy Johnson Garland came to Texas down the Mississippi and up the Red River to a point near DeKalb in the late 1850's with son Joseph Ramey Daniel (1840-1914) , daughter Margaret Garland Winston, Mr. Winston and their daughter Lillian. An older daughter, Mary Sloan (James Sloan) had preceeded them to Texas and settled at Walker Station. (notes in book possessed by E. Simmons)
1861: John Calhoun and Joe Calhoun joined the Confederate Army. Joe was a sergeant major with the 34th Cavalry. (notes in book possessed by E. Simmons)
