Robert G. (Pee Wee) Garland was elected president of the Mercury Athletic club as the full slate of officers for the coming year was unanimously chosen at a special meeting last night at Elwood hotel for the annual election.
Garland, now in service with the U.S. army, wads elected president with leave of absence, the office of president to be filled by the vice-president until Garland’s return.
“Pee Wee” Garland is Back In Town
One of the mysteries of the workings of the armed forces is the placing of men in branches of service for which they are least fitted. Until recently Robert “Pee Wee” Garland, President of the Mercury Club, was in a branch of the service to which he was not fitted. First it was the infantry, then the M.P.’s, but finally the medical corps. In the drug business in High Point before he entered the service, Garland who is here on leave, was present at last night’s meeting of the Mercury Club and answered a few questions the boys put to him about the army. Serving in the absence of Garland is Jim Steele, who presides at the meeting, but who stated last night he’ll be glad to turn the gravel over to “Pee Wee” the minute he returns from serving Uncle Sam.
Note from Robert Garland:
“I hope this war soon will be over and all of us can come back home,” said Robert Garland, president of the Mercury Athletic Club, who’s home on furlough from Fort Custer, Mich.

March 11, 1973: Robert G Garland
Robert G Garland had just quit his job as a clerk with the Southern Railway Co. He left the railway station and walked across Main Street to the Mann Drug Store in the old Elwood Hotel.
Garland was having a drink at the soda fountain when D.A. Dowdy began talking with him. “I’ve just bought the store,” Dowdy said. “I want you to open up for me in the morning.”
“I don’t know anything about the store,” Garland responded. “You’ll learn, Dowdy said.
The next morning, Robert G. Garland went to work for Mann Drug Stores. That was in October 1924. Last week, he retired after 48 years with the drug company. In 1927, he opened Mann Drug Store No. 2 at 660 N. Main Street in High Point and managed that store until his retirement.
In 1931, Garland became vice president, secretary and director of Mann Drug Co., which operates a chain of drug stores not only in High Point but in other communities in the northern Piedmont.
Garland estimates that Mann Drug Store No. 2 filled at least a million and a quarter prescriptions during the years he was its manager.
The store is still basically the same in its appearance as when he first opened it. There have been changes, however. The stools that use to be in the front of the soda fountain are gone because of the need for more space for display cases.
When Garland opened Mann Drug Store No. 2, Westwood was not cut through across Main Street to the east. Those blocks of Main Street were still residential. “There were fine homes nearby, and the store was a neighborhood drug store,” Garland recalls.
“At times, I had 12 boys working at the store on curb service. People would park their cars out front at the curb and wait there for their orders.
“I tried to have a friendly service store. That is what we wanted to give to the people.”
His work with Mann’s was not his first experience in the drug business, however, for while a student in high school, Garland had worked as a clerk in Greene Drug Co. on S. Main Street.
The son of Robert Henry Garland and Nellie Louise Gordy Garland, Garland is a native of High Point. His father, who is deceased, was a produce dealer. His mother is a resident of Emerywood Court Apts. On N. Main Street.
Garland has two sisters, Mrs. Clyde (Helen) Allred of High Point and Mrs. Jeff (Lucille) Pierce of Myrtle Beach, S.C.
He graduated from High Point High School, where he played baseball as was selected as “Best all-round” student in his graduating class. He worked for the railroad briefly following his high school graduation.
During the Second World War, he served in the army, working in a pharmacy in a hospital.
Garland has been married twice. His first wife, the former Virginia Pickens, is deceased. A daughter, Mrs. Tommy (Virginia Anne) Hopkins of Myrtle Beach, S.C., was born to this marriage. Later, Garland was married to the former Mary Klausman and they have a son, Robert Garland, II. The family resides at 806 Ferndale.
Garland is a member of First Presbyterian Church, Emerywood County Club, String and Splinter Club, the Elks, Chamber of Commerce and the North Carolina Pharmaceutical Assn. He has bee a director of Southern Film Extruders since 1966.
He was a charter Member of the Mercury Athletic Club and its president in 1946. he is also a member of North Carolina Wildlife Federation. Both of these activities reflect his interest in sports.
“I enjoy watching almost all sports, anything that is competitive,” he said. (High Point Enterprise, Sunday, March 11, 1973:Personality Profile by Robert Marks)
