    • Obituary: Los Angeles Times, Feb 4, 1999 Coles Trapnell; Television Writer Produced 'Maverick' February 04, 1999 |MYRNA OLIVER | TIMES STAFF WRITER Coles Trapnell, early television writer and producer whose series included "Maverick," has died at age 88. Trapnell, also a longtime story editor at Universal Studios who taught script writing at L.A. Valley College, died Friday of a heart attack at a retirement home in Los Angeles. In the mid-1950s, Trapnell served as story editor of the classic live television series "Four Star Playhouse," a collaboration of performers Charles Boyer, Ida Lupino, David Niven and Dick Powell. "With the number of dramatic shows on TV increasing each year," Trapnell told The Times in 1954, "competition for good stories is now a dead serious business." In those years Trapnell selected 80 scripts a year to supply "Four Star" and two half-hour shows, "The Star" and "The Story." In addition to currying known Hollywood writers, Trapnell sought top-quality material in UCLA theater arts classes and trade publications. From 1959 to 1962, Trapnell wrote his own stories and produced Warner Bros.' "Maverick," which launched James Garner as a star. Trapnell also wrote for the Western series "Lawman" and "Yancy Derringer." A native of New York, Trapnell was educated at Virginia Military Institute and New York University and began his career as a journalist on the Glen Cove Record. He moved to Hollywood in 1936 as a reader at RKO and then worked for 20th Century Fox as story editor and associate producer until 1953. He was story editor at Universal from 1962 until his retirement in 1975. In 1966, Trapnell wrote a well-received book titled "Teleplay," a guide for aspiring scriptwriters. Survivors include two daughters, Sarah Trapnell Byrne of Palo Alto and Jane Trapnell Marino of New York, three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A memorial service is scheduled at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 14, in Westwood Memorial Park. The family has asked that any memorial contributions be made to the American Heart Assn.

Trapnell, of this city, is taken from the Southern Churchman: Joseph Trapnell, of Charles Town, W. Va., died Saturday, a.m. March 16, 1912. Born in the city of Annapolis, Md., Sept 1, 1842. A grandson of Rev. Joseph Trapnell, who was born at Ottery St. Mary, Devonshire, England, November 8, 1775. Oldest son of Rev. Joseph Trapnell, D. D., who was born at Bemerton, Wiltshire, England, June 19, 1814. Our subject’s boyhood days Baltimore, Bristol, R.I., and Keokuk, Iowa, where his father was rector of churches in these places. He commenced the study of law in the office of Belknap & Lomax, at Keokuk, Iowa, in 1859. In 1861 (his father having moved to St. Marks parish, Frederick Co, Md.) he continued his legal studies with Joseph Palmer, esq., a noted attorney of Frederick, Md., until Sept, 1862, when he entered the confederate army on the 12th, Company G, 7th Va. Cavalry, where he remained until the late fall of 1864, when he joined the Maryland Battalion, which had the honor of being the last army of northern Virginia to surrender. In the summer of 1865 he continued his interrupted studies in the offices of the late N. S. White esq., at Charles Town, W. Va.. In Oct, 1866, he was admitted to the bar at Frederick, Md., and commenced the practice of his profession with his late preceptor, N. S. White, making the firm of White & Trapnell. On Nov. 20, 1866, he was united in marriage in Zion church, Charles Town, with Miss Rebecca Holmes White, only child of his preceptor and partner. The Rev. Joseph Trapnell officiated. He was the chancellor of the diocese of West Virginia, a lay deputy to the general convention of the church, which meets every three years, since 1889; a vestryman, of Zion Church, Charles Town, or warden, for upwards of forty years. • Obituary: From The Spirit of Jefferson, Charles Town WV On Sunday morning last, at the breakfast table, Mr. Nathan S. White was stricken with fatal illness and his spirit passed to the other world three hours later. The tidings as a great pall fell upon the community. Twice within a week sudden summons came to worthy citizens. Mr. White has been a resident of the town forty-eight years--and all these years were characterized by christian demeanor and neighborly consideration for all men. Confidence was reposed in him as a counsellor and friend; his church continually honored him; in the most unobtrusive way he delighted to give aid to the needy. The very large practice of his profession maintained through a long series of years was proof of his fidelity to clients. Nobody impeached his integrity. None that knew him can doubt that he has passed over the river to rest in the shade of the trees. Mr. White was born in Montgomery county. Md., in 1817, and was 71 years of age at his death. He was a graduate of Princeton College, read law with Burton & Williams at Winchester, Va., and attended lectures on law at Yale College, New Haven. He. came to this county in 1840 and began the practice of law, whice he followed until his death. For forty years member of Zion (Episcopal) Church. Many years Vestryman and Warden. Superintendent of Sunday School, and always, nearly, delegate to the Councils of the Church. He was also President of the Jefferson County Bible Society. He leaves a widow and one daughter, the wife of Mr. Joseph Trapnell. His only son was killed at Chanceliorsville in the late war, and was a member of the Stonewall brigade. The funeral services took place on Monday afternoon in Zion church. Revs. Dallas Tucker. Jno. S. Gibson and 1,. R. Mason officiated. There was an immense congregation of sorrowing friends.

Interesting they were married at St. George’s Episcopal Church. Both the Coles and Valentines were Quaker families.

    Children:
    1. VALENTINE, Thomas Edgar was born on 10 Oct 1840 in North Hempstead, Nassau, NY, USA; died on 12 Jun 1925; was buried in Friends Burying Ground, Matinecock, Nassau, NY, USA.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Occupation: Abt 1870, Operated ship yard on west side of patchogue creek
    • Residence: 1871, Sold Barteau home in Brookhaven and moved to River Avenue, Patchogue, Long Island

    Notes:

Was married three times with two (living) children by each marriage. He was tall (6 ft.), dark, good looking, very religious. He was a boat builder and when first married lived at East Haven Conn. Before that he worked at Shelter Island where his first wife came from. After he sold the Brookhaven place in 1871, he and his family lived in Patchogue where he owned a shipyard on the west bank of the creek. William was the last owner of "the old Barteau place".

William married MATTHEWS, Martha on 4 Jul 1855. Martha (daughter of MATTHEWS, William and WILLIAMS, Joanna) was born about 1829 in Redding, CT; died on 16 Feb 1866 in Galveston, Texas; was buried on 17 Feb 1866 in Pottersfield Cemetery, Galveston, Texas. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  8. 15.  MATTHEWS, MarthaMATTHEWS, Martha was born about 1829 in Redding, CT (daughter of MATTHEWS, William and WILLIAMS, Joanna); died on 16 Feb 1866 in Galveston, Texas; was buried on 17 Feb 1866 in Pottersfield Cemetery, Galveston, Texas.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Residence: Abt 1840, Newtown, CT

    Notes:

Martha’s burial record of 1866 states she was buried in Pottersfield cemetery. Of the two Potters Fields in Galveston (Confederate & Black), the date of her death (1866) suggests she was buried in Confederate Pottersfield. After the 1900 hurricane & flood, this cemetery was covered by Oleander Cemetery. If she ever had a headstone, it's unlikely it would still exist, as no family resided in Galveston after her death.
