    From Jackson Family History site

JOHN JACKSON (c. 1645/50-1725) was a son of Robert Jackson of Hempstead, Long Island, who had moved from Stamford, Connecticut, to Long Island, in 1644.  Robert was the first of the line in this country as at present established.  The son John was born about and between 1645 and 1650 presumably at Hempstead.  He lived much of his life at Jerusalem, Long Island.  His wife was Elizabeth, a daughter of Captain John Seaman (1610-1695 of Hempstead, by his first wife Elizabeth, a daughter of John Strickland of Hempstead.  It is not known when Elizabeth (Seaman) Jackson was born or died.
John Jackson's will was made on August 26, 1724, and proved December 6, 1725, so he certainly died in 1725.  The will disposed of considerable land to all his sons and left slaves and furniture to his daughters, he having nine children in all.
John Jackson was Sheriff of Queens County in 1691, was a member of the Assembly, and a Colonel of the Long Island militia.  His rank in the militia was a very high one for the times and the details of his appointment are not known but the fact of his commission is well established.  He was promoted from Captain to Major in 1697.  In 1700 he was a Lieutenant Colonel commanding the regiment of foot of Queens County under commission of the Earl of Bellomont, Governor of the Province of New York, and later promoted.

This tiny wing of the present dwelling is quite dwarfed by the more pretentious wings that have been added by subsequent residents. It is the oldest place of residence now standing in Glen Cove. until the spring of 1945 there stood a large and much weather-beaten black locust (Robina pseudocacia), in front of the house. This ancient tree was one of several brought to Long Island by Captain John Sands of Cow Neck shortly after the settlement of Musketa Cove. This was probably the first introduction of that species of locust to Long Island, although today it is very plentiful along the north shore.

    Notes:

    From Valentines in America

Hempstead was originally one of the largest towns in territory on the Island, extending from the Sound on the north to the Atlantic on the south, and from Oyster Bay on the east to Jamaica on the west. The first division of land among the sixty-six proprietors of the town took place in 1647, hardly a quarter of a century after the Pilgrims at Plymouth, and the ad- vent of the Dutch in New York. Among these was

    RICHARD VALENTINE,

then probably a young man of twenty-five or thirty years of age, but whether married or single I have no means of knowing. He was of English origin, and, from the fact that some of the company came from that section, as well as the identity of name, it is not at all improbable that he was a lineal descendant of Richard Valentine of the parish of Eccles in Lancastershire, the undoubted ancestor of the New England Valentines, more fully mentioned in another chapter— which, if my conjectures are correct, would seem to prove that these two great branches have one common origin.

Of this first American Valentine, but little is known, for the public and private records of those days were but imperfectly kept. He must have been married soon after immigrating if not before, for, in 1685, he had four sons, and perhaps more, who were freeholders. In a tax laid that year, Widow Richard Valentine is assessed for 40 acres, Obadiah, 44, William, 40, Ephraim, 40, and Richard (Jr.), 71 acres. Besides these. I find from the N. Y. Calendar of Hist. MSS., that in Feb., 1679, Jonah Valentine of Hempstead petitioned the Governor for a grant of 100 acres of land. Moreover, I find from the same source that in 1679 Richard Valentine (Jr.), "one of the Hempstead rioters," asks to be exempted from punishment "on account of his youth and ignorance." As mention is made of Richard Valentine (Sen.), in 1682, and of his widow in 1785, it seems clear that he must have died between those years, leaving at least five sons, and several daughters. There is a tradition in the family that the farm of the original Richard contained 600 acres — which probably included some "out-lots" or wild lands, as well as the homesteads named in the foregoing list.

But if the young Richard came to grief from his " sky-larking " propensities, his paternal ancestor could hardly reprove him, for he, too, had his own troubles. In the "Colonial History of the Slate of New York," Vol. II., Page 728, I find that "the Marshal of the town of Hemstede, Richard Valentyn by name," is complained of before the [Dutch] Governor- General and Council of New Netherlands, July 7, 1674, for refusing to put in execution a judgment against one Jeremy Wood, and " for uttering these seditious words: ' Is it in the name of the King of England? for I will do nothing in the name of the Prince or of the States of Holland,' " &c. True to his English origin, the Marshal found the Dutch Government a galling yoke to bear. It would seem, however, that neither father nor son received any severe punishment, or some mention would have been made of it.

In the stirring events of that period, the Valentines appear to have taken an active part. Thus, in 1702, Richard Valentine was one of the Grand Jury raised especial!}- to indict Samuel Bownes, an itinerant Quaker preacher who came to that region ; but instead of doing so, the jury endorsed the paper “Ignoramus" and returned it to the Judge, utterly refusing to have anything to do with such dirty work. Many of Richard's posterity afterwards became " Friends " them- selves, and some remain such to this day.

In 1726, Obadiah Valentine was one of a committee to put a stop to the " wicked and wanton burning of Hempstede Plains."

Of this family of Richard Valentine and his five sons, there is not, so far as I can learn, any continuous and authentic genealogy in existence; but it is certain that nearly all the Valentines of Long Island, except those in the city of Brooklyn (and even many in that city also), have descended from these. The family name soon extended to adjoining towns, especially to Oyster Bay, Jamaica and Flushing, until finally it was common in every town in Queens County, and was occasionally found in the other counties of Long Island, Kings and Suffolk.

    Notes:

Notes on Robert Coles House: The original home of Robert Coles is standing today as the east wing of the residence at 34 The Place.

    Notes:

Robert and Mary [Hawxhurst] Coles, who came to Mass. Bay with Gov. Winthrop in 1630

From Early Geneologies of the Cole Family:

The Long Island Family of Coles

Robert Cole. The name is frequently spelled with an “s” in the old records. He came in the fleet of Winthrop in 1630, and was one of those who desired to be admitted freeman October 19, 1630, and he was admitted May 18, 1631.

In 1632 it was ordered that two delegates be sent from each of the plantations to advise the Governor and assistants in regard to the raising of revenue, and he was one of the two sent from Roxbury. His drinking habits were opposed to the ideas of the Puritans, and he was several times fined. At length the following order was passed:

“March 4, 1633: The court orders that Robert Coles, for drunkeness by him committed at Roxbury, shall be disfranchised, weare about his necke and soe to hange upon his outward garment a D made of redd clothe and sett upon white; to contynue this for a yeare, and not to leave it off any tyme when he comes amongst company, under penalty of XLs. for the first offense, and V pounds for the second, and after to be punished by the court as they think meet; also he is to weare the D outwards, and is enjoyned to appear at the next general court, and to contynue thise until it be ended.”

The same month he went with the party under John Winthrop, Jr., to occupy Agawam (Ipswich), and begin the settlement of that town. He did not remain there long, and he may be the man mentioned in the will of Samuel Fuller, the elder, of Plymouth, July 30, 1633, as then residing with him in Plymouth.

Savage says of him that he reformed his habits. He was one of the twelve men who joined Roger Williams in the settlement of Providence, in October, 1638. His lot in the division of the land was bounded west by the present Main street, east by Hope street, and on one other side by Meeting House street. (Annals of Providence, 33.) He was one of the founders of the first Church of Providence, March 16, 1639. (Arnold’s Rhode Island, 107.) He was one of the seventeen who purchased the Pautuxet meadows, and he made his home there.

Three others were appointed with him as a committee to arbitrate disputes and to make rules of government, and their report was the compact signed by all the settlers. He became a friend of Samuel Gorton when he came to Providence, driven from Massachusetts by the intolerance of the authorities of that colony, and gave him part of his land. The actions of Gorton and his followers were such, however, as to cause the older settlers to wish to be free from them, and he, with four others, in September, 1642, appeared before the general court at Boston and yielded themselves up to the Massachusetts colony, which accepted jurisdiction and appointed the magistrates. (Arnold, 468.)

The commissioners found the charge true, and promised to write Mr. Cole to return the money. (Ply. Col. Rec. X., 375.). He died before October, 1654, as on October 18 of that year the town council distributed his property in the way he should have made his will.

The following orders refer to his estate:

“Warwick, Rhode Island, June 11, 1656: The town council having formerly disposed of the estate of Robert Cole, late deceased, and having allotted out the portions of the children, ordered that the lands and meadows, together with the pasturage on the south side of the Pautuxet river and the north line bound of Warwick bound is allotted out for security of Nathaniel Cole, Robert Cole, and Sarah Cole, their portions amounting to the sum of six score pounds.

“Further ordered, that the mill of Warwick being a part of the estate of Robert Cole, late deceased, is allotted out for security of Daniel Cole, his portion being £50.”

He married Mary ----. After his death she married Mathias Harvey, and removed to Oyster Bay, Long Island, where she died.

    Notes:

From History of Long Island, Vol 3: The Scudder family, although not among the original settlers of Suffolk county, might almost claim directly, can, in some of its branches at least, claim descent by intermarriage with every one of its historic families of which Suffolk is so justly proud. Then, too, their own American pedigree commences at a date almost ranking with the first. The American Pioneer, Thomas Scudder, left Grafton, England in 1636, and settled at Salem, Massachusetts. He left three sons, Thomas, John and Henry, all of whom in 1652 crossed over to Long Island to become residents of Southold. After a while, they all moved to Huntington township and acquired land there.

From Long Island Genealogies: THOMAS SCUDDER, sr (supposed to be his son) came from Groton, England with wife Elisabeth in 1636. Settled at Salem, Mass., died there in 1657.
