Ryland Drennan Obituary

Santa Cruz Evening News, 20 Jan 1928, P 1 Col 7

Captain Drennan Dies Suddenly of Heart Attack

Captain Ryland Drennan, son of the late Samuel and Louisa Drennan, is dead. This was the sad message received by his brother-in-law, W. C. Byrne, late yesterday afternoon. Death was caused by heart trouble and occurred while Captain Drennan was in company with friends on his way to the San Francisco golf links. His sister, Mrs. Byrne, and her husband left for San Francisco at once.

It was only recently that Mr. Drennan was here on one of his regular visits, apparently enjoying good health, and his sudden passing came as a sad blow.

Captain Drennan, a member of one of the pioneer families of Santa Cruz, spent all of his boyhood here, having been born in the old family home adjoining the First Methodist church. He attended the Mission Hill school and graduating decided to follow navigation. One of the first boats he shipped on as a seaman was the Shenandoah, the first steel schooner to find its way to Oriental, Australian and South American ports. He was an apt scholar and the life of the sea appealed to him. His rise was rapid and it was not many years before he realized his cherished ambition and was promoted to the rank of captain.

In this capacity he was in command of some of the largest liners that sailed the Pacific. One of the first big passenger ships he was in charge of was the Newport. It was only a few weeks ago that this ship was put out for commission.

For many years Captain Drennan was identified with the Panama line of the Pacific Mail Steamship company. On return from long cruises Mr. Drennan always found extreme pleasure visiting the city of his birth to see his parents as well as mingle with his many boyhood friends. He was a man of fine personality and characteristics. His wife was a daughter of Mrs. Pacific Nichols of Union street and the late U. S. Nichols. Mr Drennan was prominently identified with the Masonic order and this order will assist in the funeral services.

Besides the wife, Mrs. Lois Drennan, he leaves three sisters, Edith, wife of Howard Gragg of San Luis Obispo, Mabel, wife of W. C. Byrne of this city, and Dora, wife of R. B. H. Collier of Berkeley.

The mother, Mrs. Louise Drennan, who passed away a number of years ago, was prominent as an educator during the pioneer era in this city.
