Text I’ve been looking through some of my mother’s things this week, and came across an envelope labeled - Grandma Byrne’s journal 1943.
It belongs to my mothers grandmother married to George Griffing Byrne. She wrote beginning January 1, 1943, and mentioned that she hoped there would be peace that year. Wow. It took me awhile to figure out who was writing. She must have lived with her sister, Mattie, because she always mentions when Mattie was gone to town or something. She mentions visiting with her sisters-in-law, Gertrude, Helen, and brother-in-law Howard. Names I heard growing up (my great aunts and uncles up in the Carmel/Monterey area- when I met them)) I also noticed that she lived at 320 King Street in Santa Cruz in 1914
    How fun!

Also - I have a picture of My grandma and Grandpa Byrne’s headstone up in Oakland.
My grandma Agnes Mercer Holland was born in 1889. Her mother’s grave Agnes S Holland (married name) says she died in 1889 @ 29 years old. That is because she died in childbirth with my grandma when she was born. My mother told me that before she died.
You’ll also notice that my aunt Marian’s (Marian Helen Byrne) name is on the top edge of Walter G and Agnes Holland Byrne’s marker.
Marian was hit by a car in her teens, and her head injury left her with scytzophrenia (?) so she lived most of her life in an institution, working in the kitchen. I attached a picture of her dated 1935 on the back.
