806 | Judah (Jack) Asimov (1896-1969), her half first cousin once removed, mentions her in "In Memory Yet Green," Isaac Asimov's autobiography: "In my time, he [her father, Judah Asimov] married and had a daughter. 807 | Judah (Jack) Asimov, 1896-1969, writes that Mordechai died "before I even knew Mamma," Anna Berman, Mordechai's sister. Judah writes that Mordechai was not married, and that he had more than 300 rubles -- a fortune. He left the money to "his little sister," Anna Berman. But with her consent, Anna's family put the money into a trust and used it to make interest-free loans to needy Petrovichians. It was thought that a side benefit of this arrangement would be that Mordechai would be remembered for a long time to come, despite not having had a family. Although loans were provided, many people failed to repay them. Eventually, the money was all used up. But, as you can see, the Berman family's wish came true; he is remembered today because of the Berman family's generosity. | BERMAN, Mordecai (I55)

809 | July 20, 1900, Hollister Freelance: Suit for Divorce -- Olive E. BUCKLEY has commenced suit in the Superior Court against William H. BUCKLEY for a divorce, alleging that defendant has deserted plaintiff and their child from more than a year past. BUCKLEY is said to be residing at Redding. Sept 7, 1900, Hollister Freelance: Mrs. Olive BUCKLEY was granted a divorce last Monday afternoon in the Superior court, from Wm. H. BUCKLEY on the grounds of failure to provide and desertion. From the evidence adduced it appears that defendant desired plaintiff to mortgage her property for $200 in order that he might go to the Klondike. She refused to do so and the hard feeling engendered by her refusal finally culminated in defendant packing up his belongings and leaving the house. With the exception of the sum of $5 which he sent plaintiff on 1 occasion, he has never contributed to her support during his roamings in different parts of the State, for the past 2 years?she was awarded custody of the minor child. | Family: BUCKLEY, William Henry / RUE, Olive Esalia (F754)

815 | L. B. AUSTIN. L. B. Austin was born February 20, 1819, in Addison County, Vermont. His father, Francis Brown Austin, was a native of New Hampshire. His mother, Eleanor Whitten, was also a native of New Hampshire. In 1833 the family moved to Oswego, New York, where they remained until 1838. In the spring of 1838 they moved to Indiana. In 1840 he went to Cleveland, Ohio, where he remained for two years. In 1842 he went to Iowa, where he engaged in furniture business, in the city of Burlington, remaining until 1849. He left Burlington with Captain Henry Niles' company for California. At St. Joseph the company received additions and thoroughly organized. They had no serious trouble with the Indians, and at Humboldt the company disbanded. He entered California August 16, 1849, through Bear Valley, passing Donner Lake, which had so recently been the scene of the Donner party's sufferings. Hearing that carpenters were in great demand at Fremont, Yolo County, he went there, 1851, he went to Nevada County, where he remained until 1868, when he went to Hollister. In 1874 he moved to Monterey, and in 1877 came to Santa Cruz. HISTORY OF SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, CALIFORNIA.- E. S. Harrison, Pacific Press Publ. 882 | Margaret McCunes notes on her mother, Neva, on the occasion of her 80th birthday celebration: Neva was born Aug. l7, l9l8 to parents Ivon Richard King & Eva (Austin) King in Hollister, CA. Her early years were spent at the King Ranch behind Tres Pinos, the Molera Ranch, the Mee Ranch (Then owned by Jess & Warren Cornwall) & othen our part of California. Following the death of her brother, Jack , when Neva was seven, her mother became a semi-invalid, & Neva spent most of her days & time with her father, Ivon, a noted horseman of the time & area . ( He was a great friend of George Frusetta of Tres Pinos...father of Peter Frusetta. I visited with George ,once He was telling me all kind of stories...., but I couldn't hear him...Sigh!) Neva's love of roping & "being outside" began. (Mom always told me that," God's greatest church is outside of any building!") Neva attended thirteen different grammar schools in eight years. All of them were in the Monterey & San Benito Counties. They included Peach Tree School, Quien Sabe School, Big Sur School, the Sur School & Monterey Elementary School. Neva attended three years at Monterey High School before marrying Albert "Al" Dani at the age of sixteen in l935. (Dad was 29...I think they married in San Jose.) She has two children, Margaret (a Reading Teacher", and Butch (Albert Ivoi), an bank officer....manager in Wells Fargo Bank. When Neva's two children were both in grammar school, Neva went back to high school in King City & graduated in the class of l952 at the age of 34. She also took two years of home business study courses from the University of California inely (sp?). Neva was employed as a cook at the old King City Hospital from l952 until l957 when she began work as the Secretary-Manager of the King City & Southern Monterey County Chamber of Commerce & Agriculture. This was right up Neva's alley ase her a chance to promote the part of California she loves. Neva "retired" in l980 after 23 years with the Chamber of Commerce. The "retired" is used loosely as Neva is known for her inability to say "no" to any civic or community group needing her help. Neva has donated volunteer help to the Brownies, the Girl Scouts, & Red Cross, & was a general community 4-Hr for ten years plus. Neva worked at the Salinas Valley Fair Livestock Office for many a year far into the night. Neva continues to be active in Rebekah's, Royal Neighbors, Silver Kings & Queens, & a voting precinct volunteer. Throughout all her busy life , nothing came before Neva's love of riding & roping. Neva was to be found at most mixed team ropings. One of her favorite partners was Pete Pedrazzi. They placed eight of the ten times they entered the populent at the Monterey Fair, winning the "silver buckle" in l959. Other of her partners were her husband, Al; his business partner, Durward; Freddy Roth; & Roy Gianolini. Neva also won or placed at the Monterey County Horse Show in Salinas, in King City, at the Bolado Rodeo & at numerous jack-pot ropings. During the time Neva wasn't roping, she was to be found in the timer's booth for PRCA & local ropings. Neva's roping was finally curtailed by the loss of 2 and a half fingers on her roping hand during a "dispute" with the lawn mower. What was she doing trying to mow the lawn at dusk? You guessed it....there was a calf branding the nex, & she wanted to get the job done so she could go..... In l975, Neva's husband , Al, passed away; in l982, she remarried his long-time partner in the cattle business, Durward Ward (Charles Durward Ward). (Note: Mom was named "Vaquera" of the Monterey County Horse Show in Monterey at the Monterey Fair Grounds in l9__?) Neva still believes that God's greatest gift is the "outdoors". She loves to garden...& has miles of it. she also loves to play Pedro, Bingo, & to "gamble a little" ! She also is still "Johnny-on-the-spot" if their is a calf-branding toound, although now she "vaccinates" instead of roping! | KING, Neva Verna (I603)
