Esquire article on Thomas John Hall Trapnell

    March, 1943

    Salute to Tom Trapnell, D.S.C.
West Point grid star who wanted to be preacher, became instead hero of the bridge at Rosario
    by A. PAUL MEKTON

On January 22, 1942, from his field headquarters in the Philippines, General Douglas MacArthur announced the award of the Distinguished Service Cross to Major T.J. Hall Trapnell, Cavalry. The communique from General MacArthur stated:

Major Trapnell, who is a former football hero of the United States Military Academy, matched his brilliant gridiron career with outstanding exploits on the battlefield. The action for which Major Trapnell was decorated took place at Rosario in La Union province on December 22, 1941, while his cavalry unit was engaged in rear-guard operations. During concentrated enemy fire from tanks and infantry, Major Trapnell remained between the hostile force and his own troops and set fire to a truck on a bridge. He waited until the bridge was in flames before leaving the scene in a scout car. He then retired slowly with the rear elements of his organization, picked up wounded soldiers and rallied his men. With complete disregard for his personal safety, Major Trapnell delayed the hostile advance and set an inspiring example to his entire regiment.

We have only to go back to his family antecedents for the elements that produced Major Trapnell, D.S.C. His grandfathers, on both paternal and distaff sides were rebel troopers in the Civil War, one of them in General Ashby's cavalry. His grandmother's brother, Thomas White, was on Stonewall Jackson's staff. Of the present generation of the family that includes twenty-nine men, seventeen are in the United States armed forces, ranging in rank from Colonel Trapnell himself to a corporal. The eldest, brother, Joseph Trapnell, 3rd, served in the United States Navy during the World War on the transport Zuiderdijk and was wounded in action. Another brother, Commander Walter Scott Trapnell, was graduated from Annapolis in 1920 and is now port captain in Balboa, Panama. A cousin, Lieutenant Commander Frederick M. Trapnell, a Navy flyer and crack pilot, took part in the flight of 18 bombers from San Diego to Honolulu in 1938.

Called Hall by his family, Tom Trapnell was born in Yonkers in 1902 and began making football history in the Mount Hebron Grammar School in Upper Montclair, N.J. where he early learned to go up against odds without flinching. A game had been booked with the jayvee team of a neighboring school. When the opposing team came on the field, Hebron's coach spotted a player of the first team in the jayvee lineup. The coach protested, but young Trapnell said: "Aw, let him play. We don't care." Then on the first play after the kick-off, the ringer, carrying the ball, came around end. Tom, playing halfback, made a flying tackle. The ringer was out!

When Tom was ready for high school, his grandfather, Joseph Trapnell, a trustee of Episcopal High School, Alexandria, Virginia, got him a partial scholarship. He went in for track, basketball, lacrosse and football, and his third year he was captain of the eleven. It was during the years at Episcopal High that the influence of his ministerial relatives induced him to plan to become an Episcopal minister. A great-grandfather, grandfather and two uncles were Episcopal ministers.

However, Major C.D. Daly, football coach at West Point, sold him on the idea of trying for an appointment to the Academy. He succeeded in gelling an alternate appointment, and during the interim, Tom and some of his high school friends served as a temporary pickup crew for his brother Joe, who was port steward and purchasing agent for the Baltimore Steamship Company, sailing to Caribbean ports on the S.S. Coelleda and the S.S. Lake Fauquier as ordinary seamen.

Subsequently he took the competitive examination and won the appointment to West Point, entering the Academy from New Jersey in 1923. A two-letter man, outstanding in both football and lacrosse, he was also Phi Beta Kappa, president of his class for three years, teacher in the Sunday school to which children of the post were sent, and president of the Y.M.C.A. The West Point year book of 1927 said of him: "For the class and for the Academy, he has been a zealous worker, but towards his own advancement he has taken a nonchalant attitude -- the attitude of the truly unselfish comrade-in-arms. He is one who thinks first, acts quickly and wisely, and of whom it can never be said that he boasts."

At the end of his leave after he was graduated in 1927, Tom was sent to Monterey, California, with the calvary. There he took up polo and became a star. In 1929, he married Miss Alyse Snow in Fresno. She is now living in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, having been evacuated from the Philippines in May, 1942.

In 1939 Trapnell was sent to the Philippines at the request of General MacArthur, who likes the football type of officer. With the fall of Bataan he was reported captured by the Japs. From a passenger returning on the Gripsholm, the family heard that "The Kid", as he was known to them, was a prisoner in Tarlac prison —- emaciated and drawn with prison pallor and malnutrition. Neither his mother, Mrs. Laura Trapnell who lives in Baltimore, nor any other member of his family has heard from him since the war started.

Thomas married SNOW, Alys Julie on 1 Jun 1929 in Fresno, CA. Alys (daughter of SNOW, Charles Sherman and MCCUNE, Hulda) was born on 27 Aug 1906 in Fresno, California; died on 21 Jan 1953. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Mrs. Dosh, who was known as "Polly," was born in Montclair, N.J., the daughter of Joseph Trapnell Jr. and Laura Virginia Kennedy. She was a member of one of the First Families of Virginia, and was a descendant of Elizabeth Marshall, sister of Chief Justice John Marshall (1755-1835).

She attended St. Mary's Junior College in Raleigh, N.C., and graduated from Hollins College. In 1936 she was included in the executive training class at the former Hutzler's department store and was in charge of the telephone home shopping service.

In 1941 she resigned to marry John Alexander Hilleary of a colonial Prince George's County family. That marriage ended in divorce.

In 1950, she became a supervisor with Rice's Bakery in Baltimore, where she managed 23 bake shops and supervised 125 sales persons.

In April 1963 she married Hammond P. Dorsey of Jacksonville, Fla. In June of that year Mr. Dorsey died suddenly while working on his uncle's 1,000-acre farm, Oak Hill, in what is now Columbia in Howard County.

In 1965 Mrs. Dosh was hired as a social worker in old age assistance in Howard County, retiring in 1974. She then obtained a real estate license and worked as an associate with the former Henderson Realty Co. in Catonsville.

After being a widow for 13 years, she married Dr. Stanley Hyde Dosh, a professor at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry for 39 years. He died in 1989.

Mrs. Dosh enjoyed bridge and travel to Europe via cruise ships, and to Panama and Bermuda. An ardent environmentalist, she granted an easement on the 23-acre Dorsey property adjacent to the Baltimore National Cemetery to the Maryland Environmental Trust in 1994.

She was a lifelong member of the National Society Colonial Dames 17th Century, the Daughters of the American Revolution Soldier's Delight Chapter and the Jefferson County Historical Society and the Catonsville Woman's Club.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Obituary: From Port City Daily: Whether she was stationed in a foreign country or chose to travel with her family, Elizabeth Trapnell King, known as Bettie to her friends and family, was always on the go. She brought home plenty of “knick-knacks” over the years like little fans and pottery, but there was one artifact she never left a city without: a postcard. Mrs. King, of Wilmington, died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2014. She was 93. Mrs. King and her husband bonded over their love of traveling and, because of his career in the U.S. Marine Corps, she and her family explored the different states and countries where he was stationed. Most fondly remembered by her daughter, Ginger Wells, are the two years she spent in the Philippine Islands. Mrs. Wells remembers taking the ferry across to Manila in the Philippines with her mother to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables. Mrs. King took her children to see where the Bataan Death March was held during WWII, traded sweaters for unique hand-carved wooden sculptures and traveled in brightly painted military jeeps to buy papayas and mangoes. Mrs. Wells said most of the learning she and her siblings had was done through experience, saying “we did things we couldn’t learn in a book.” Her parents’ love of traveling helped her appreciate other cultures. Mrs. King and her husband continued traveling throughout their lives, exploring all over the United States and abroad. They participated in Elderhostels, including once staying at a convent where they learned about food and its preparation. “It wasn’t just touring beautiful sights, it was also learning neat off-the-wall things,” Mrs. Wells said. Mrs. Wells said her mother continued to thrive in her love of adventure in her older years. She enjoyed sailing with her son at Masonboro Island, climbing aboard a 14-foot sailboat and collecting shells. The one artifact Mrs. King never came home without was a postcard. Sometimes she’d write to her children and send them home; other times, she simply purchased a postcard with a photo of where they’d been to bring home and show her family. In honor of her traveling, Mrs. King’s granddaughter, Christy Shi, is putting together a map for her funeral service. Using ribbons attached to the postcards collected over the years, Ms. Shi will highlight all the places Mrs. King visited throughout her life. She was born June 5, 1921, in Baltimore, the daughter of the late Joseph Trapnell, III and Elizabeth Sellman Trapnell and was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Lt. Col. William Joseph King; brothers, Joseph Trapnell, IV “Trap” and Dr. Henry R. Trapnell; son, Richard W. King; and grandson, Jason Wells. Surviving are her daughters, Mrs. J. Stephen Shi (Betsy), of Alto, Ga. and Mrs. Robert J. Wells, Jr. (Ginger), of Hampstead; son, James T. King, of Chicago; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, 2014, at St John’s Episcopal Church, Wilmington. Interment will follow at the Hallock Memorial Garden adjacent to the church. Family will receive friends immediately after in Elebash Hall. The family wishes to thank her wonderful team of caregivers for their special love and care that enabled her to remain in the comfort of her own home as her health declined and the staff of Lower Cape Fear Hospice, where she spent her final days. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. John’s Episcopal Church – Hallock Memorial Garden, 1219 Forest Hills Drive, Wilmington, NC 28403 or to Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 1414 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC 28401.

    • Also Known As: Bucky / Buck
    • Education: Polytechnic Institute and Johns Hopkins University
    • Obituary: From The Baltimore Sun, 13 June 2014: Franklin Waters "Buck" Trapnell Jr., a retired Army colonel who served in Vietnam, died of a heart attack May 31 while visiting family near Richmond, Va. The former Roland Park resident was 77. Born in Baltimore and raised on Lake Avenue in Cedarcroft, he was the son of Franklin Waters Trapnell, an attorney who became an Office of Strategic Services and Central Intelligence Agency officer. His mother was Emily Willson Rieman Smith, a homemaker and volunteer. According to an autobiographical sketch, he spent much of his youth in Berlin, Germany, and Vienna, Austria, after World War II during the military occupation. "He routinely, and unofficially, assisted his father with his intelligence work," said his granddaughter, Alexa Warthen of Philomont, Va. "He was a courier, sabotaged car batteries, debriefed refugees, changed out wiretap batteries and collected wiretap recordings. "He used the Vienna city sewer system to do this work. He stood guard for East German defectors and used his father's pistol. He had an unorthodox upbringing and developed a remarkably open mind and had an exceptional grasp of adaptive tactics." After returning to Baltimore, he enrolled at Polytechnic Institute but left school to join the Maryland National Guard and serve in the 29th Division. He later studied at the Johns Hopkins University and was acting head of its Reserve Officers Training Corps for a year. After serving in the National Guard, he enlisted in the Army in 1961 and trained as a light infantryman and attended parachute school. While at Fort Bragg, he completed Special Forces qualification as a weapons specialist. He also trained in communications, demolitions, medical work and intelligence. After attending Officer Candidate School, he was commissioned as an infantry officer. He served in Vietnam from July 1965 to August 1966 and participated in the Battle of Ia Drang Valley during the Pleiku campaign. "He was a hard-nosed, tactically savvy commander and a genuinely caring mentor," said his granddaughter, who is a former Army captain and flier. She said that that during the second half of his first Vietnam tour, he served as company executive officer and as company commander. While on duty in Vietnam, Colonel Trapnell was photographed and quoted in a 1966 Baltimore Sun article. "We've been here a week, and I guess we're going to be here another," he said in the article, which covered U.S. aircraft bombing a jungle site. Colonel Trapnell returned to the U.S. and became an intelligence officer in the 82nd Airborne Division. He then volunteered for a second tour in Vietnam. "The locals trusted him, and would bring their gold savings and valuables for his safekeeping whenever a Viet Cong attack was in the offing," his granddaughter said. "He in turn recognized the situation as a harbinger of impending attack; he used it to prepare for subsequent attacks. He would later return the valuables." From 1982 to 1984, he commanded the 1st Battalion, 41st Infantry in the 2nd Armored Division at Fort Hood and headed a Bradley Fighting Vehicle training team. Colonel Trapnell taught military science at Hopkins and oversaw ROTC programs at Loyola University Maryland and Towson University, among other colleges in the Mid-Atlantic. He retired in 1990. "He had a near flawless memory and made an unforgettable first impression," said his granddaughter. In retirement, he moved from homes on Wyndhurst Avenue and Overlook Place in North Baltimore to a home he designed and built in Manassas, Va. He cleared the land and worked on the house's construction. "He was the patriarch of the family, and he advised and coordinated many family investments," his granddaughter said. He also built, owned and operated cellphone towers from West Virginia to Wyoming. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Episcopal Church of the Nativity, 419 Cedarcroft Road, where he had been a member. In addition to his granddaughter, survivors include his wife of 55 years, the former Elizabeth Florence Rich Flannery, who performed with the Spotlighters and at the Four Corners Theatre; a daughter, Emily Marilla Trapnell Coryell of Baltimore; a stepson, Michael Flannery of Baltimore; two stepdaughters, Colise Medved of Washington and Agnes Collins Flannery of Walnut Creek, Calif.; seven other grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
