  Obituary	From Hollister Free Lance, 5 May 1916 JACK FROST PASSES INTO THE BEYOND Well Known Citizen and Head of Grangers' Union Grocery Department for Twenty-Five Years, a Victim of Pneumonia. Stricken with fatal illness after 25 years, almost to the day, of faithful service in the Grangers' Union grocery department, Winfield Scott Frost, better known to his many friends as "Jack" Frost, after nine days' battle against pleurisy and pneumonia, died Saturday evening at his home on South street. The flag on the Grangers' Union building flies at half-mast today in respect to the memory of a valued employee and the business houses of Hollister will be closed this afternoon between the hours of 2 and 3 o'clock, while the funeral services are being held at the family residence. The body will be taken to San Mateo on the varly train tomorrow for cremation. Winfield Scott Frost was born at Princeton, Ohio, October 22nd, 1848. He came to California in 1876, and for a year lived at Bodie, in Mono county. In 1877 he came to Hollister and for several years was in the employ of the late F. A. Cunning, who conducted a grocery at the corner of San Benito and Fifth streets, the Kelly corner. In April, 1891, Mr. Frost went to work for the Grangers' Union as head of the grocery department, and hold the position up to the time of his death. Naturally he met many people among the customers of the firm and traveling salesmen and won the respect of all by his unfailing courtesy and strict attention to business. Honest, loyal and kind, he led a life beyond reproach and made many sincere friends who will deeply regret his death. Mr. Frost was married May 30th, 1883, at Hollister, to Miss Mary La Rue, the widow who survives him. Their married life was happy. One son was born to them, James Harvey Frost, whose home is at Tracy. The decedent was a member of the Independent Order of Foresters and was a member of the Episcopalian church  [4]
