Obituary From the Brooklyn Daily Times, 7 Aug 1926:

    BURY MRS. M. A. COLES

    Little Neck. Woman Descendant

    Quakers- -Father Western Pioneer.

Funeral services were held this afternoon for Mrs. Maria A. Coles, 91, who died at the home of her son. John H. Coles, Zion st., Little Neck, after a long illness.

Mrs. Coles was born in Holland, Erie County. She was a daughter of Anson Norton. With a group of other pioneers her father set out tor the West, taking his young daughter with him and Mrs. Coles often told how she and other girls in the group of early settlers in Maquoketa, Iowa. would round up the horses and do many other things connected with pioneer life.

Mrs. Coles was married to William H. Coles, a descendant of an old. Quaker family at Glen Cove. After her marriage she made her home for a number of years in Brooklyn. She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Sarah A. Graecert, of Brooklyn; Mrs. Anna H. Albertson of Amityville, and Mrs. Mary C. Van Andburgh, of England, and one son, John H. Coles, of Little Neck. burial took place in Friends' Cemetery at Locust Valley  [6

    • Maria A. Norton wife of William H. Coles 1835-1926
    Notes
    • Maria declares her status as widow on June 26 1900, although on the 11th of June, her husband, William, is still reported as alive per census.

As fallout from the case of the mysterious death of her newborn grndson, Maria and her daughter, Mary, began legal proceedings against the Brooklyn Daily Times, which had heavily covered the case (and appeared to cast a sideways glance at the verdict that the baby had died of apoplexy).

From the Brooklyn Eagle, 18 Jun 1888:

      TWO BIG LIBEL SUITS.

Mrs. Coles, of Glen Cove, and her daughter, Mrs. Titus, have retained Counselor Cromwell, who has associated with him ex-Judge Covert, to bring suits against the Brooklyn Times for damages for libel for charging them with child murder. The ladies were vindicated by the Coroner's jury and the Grand Jury on the evidence of reputable physicians. The damages in each case are laid at $25,000. [9]
