Victim of Auto Accident Near Carmel is Dead

Mrs. Clara Neugent Passes Away At Hospital

Mrs. Clara Neugent, born in Santa Cruz 56 years ago, died yesterday morning at the hospital at Carmel as the result of injuries received near Carmel in an automobile accident on Sunday, August 21.

The body was brought from Carmel and taken to the Wessendorf mortuary where services will be held at the chapel at 2:30 o'clock this afternoon and will be conducted by Rev. Heber St. Clair Mahood of the First Congregational church.

The news of her death was received with sadness by the many friends who have been anxiously hoping for the best for the last 12 days.

She was a member of early California families. Her mother, Mrs. Pacific Nichols, is a member of the Guild, one of the very early Santa Cruz families. Her father, the late U. S. Nichols, came to Santa Cruz in 1866.

Mrs. Neugent was a member of the Business and Professional Women's club and for many years was in the employ of Leask's Seaside store and in the store she had many friends among her fellow employes and the patrons.

She was educated in the public schools of this city and graduated from the high school. Her husband preceded, her in death by a number of years and she is survived by her daughter, Miss Lois Neugent, a teacher in the Sonoma county schools; her mother, Mrs. Pacific Nichols, of 31 Union street, and her sister, Mrs. Ryland Drennan.

Mrs. Neugent was injured when her automobile turned turtle and pinned her beneath the machine. Her mother, Mrs. Nichols, was in the car with her but was thrown free and escaped with a 6light cut on the head. Mrs. Neugent's left arm was terribly mangled and broken and the day after was amputated near the shoulder.

Blood poisoning set in and the patient grew gradually worse until the end early yesterday morning.  [3
