      John Graves and Delilah Smith were married in 1821 in Boston, where Mr. Graves was engaged in the livery business. He subsequently bought a farm in Methuen, built a soap factory, and conducted an extensive business. After the founding, in 1847, of Lawrence, the "new city," as it was called, he removed to Billerica. [4]
