William Hewlett Coles.
Glen Cove, L. I., March 14 --The funeral of William Hewlett Coles, who died on Monday, took place at 11 o'clock this morning from Friends' meeting house, a large number of relatives and friends being in attendance. Addresses were made by Isaac Sherwood and Elias Underhill. Seawanhaka Council. No. 362, of which the deceased was a member, attended in a body and conducted services at the grave.
The deceased was a native of Glen Cove, being, the youngest son of Thomas and Amelia Coles, who were among the early settlers of Glen Cove. He wan born at Duck Pond on December 25, 1832. He was educated in the public school here and in a private school at Locust Valley conducted by Lott Cornelius. When a young man he was engaged in the insurance business in New York city. In 186S he returned to Glen Cove and accepted a position as bookkeeper in what was then known as the Continental store. This position he held for twenty-seven years.
He was one of those who were injured by the giving way of the floor of a building in which court was being held, in 1853, losing his right hand.
He married Maria Norton of Iowa. Six children were born, of whom five are living -- Mrs. George C. Draegert of Buffalo, Mrs. W. G. Albertson of Amityrille, Mrs I. J. Van Amburgh of Glen Cove, Thomas Coles of Glen Cove and William Coles of Buffalo.. [5]Occupation When a young man he was engaged in the insurance business in New York city.
