  Notes	Unnamed infant Titus becaem a huge scandal in Glen Cove and beyond. Conflicting accounts between the mother, grandmother, husband and multiple doctors over circumstances surrounding the birth of the child and his death within a few hours, with attending physician claiming strangulation and grandmother claiming death by natural causes. Further salcious accounts in the New York World implied the mother, Mary Coles, carried on with a number of ‘fast’ men, and that her marriage to Jacob Titus was not fully legitimate/above-board. Over the course of two weeks, an inquest presented some damning testimony by doctors and the coroner, but the fact there was conflicting statements ultimately led the jury to quietly sweep the matter under the rug. This letter to the editor from the Brooklyn Daily Times, 18 Jun 1888, attempts to put the matter to rest: The Titus Case. To the Editor of the Brooklyn Times: June 18, 1888. SIR: We regret that your correspondent from Glen Cove is disposed to keep alive the unfortunate and unpleasant affair of the Titus baby, notwithstanding the result of the Coroner's inquest and the investigation before the Grand Jury. In last Thursday's TIMES we are told that "this really decides nothing," when every one else supposed that after an entirely disinterested jury had been unable to find evidence sufficient to warrant them to bring in an indictment, the very least that could be said is " not proven." We read further that the "community at large" take very little stock in the testimony of the three physiciana that the child died of apoplexy, since Drs. Watson and Hall found such not to be the case," and are promised "an interview with one of these gentlemen next week which will prove very interesting." The fact is, the " community at large " cares very little about the opinions of the physicians who testified in the case. The affair has been legally investigated by both the Coroner and the Grand Jury. There has been no opposition on the part of any one to the closest scrutiny, and the better part of the community are satisfied, and here the whole matter should end. It was the height of cruelty to make so grave a charge as child murder, at the outset, before the investigation; and it is an outrage on those most interested, as well as an unjust and needless infliction upon the community, to keep alive these suspicions. In all cases where there is a disagreement of authorities or a reasonable doubt of guilt, it is always the proper thing to give the benefit of the doubt to the suspected parties, aud it shows an unkind and uncharitable spirit to continue to harrow the feelings of the families and friends of the parties implicated in this matter by these insinuations. It has been a sad affair all through, and instead of keeping it before the public any longer by "interviews" and attempts to justify the unsubstantial charge of infanticide, the less said about it and the sooner It is forgotten the better. The publicity which has been given to this affair through the newspapers has already had a widely demoralizing effect upon our young people and that there way be no more of it is the sincere wish of ONE OF MANY.
