  	From Brooklyn Eagle, 20 May 1895: “Furman's Attempted Suicide: Patchogue, L. I., May 20-The news of the attempted suicide of John L. Furman of thls village, in the Potomac river, caused universal surprise and regret among his many friends in his old home here. He left Patchogue about two weeks ago for New York to resume his business. A year ago be was in partnership with his brother, Salem R., of 9 Third avenue, Now York, but they dissolved about a year ago, when John returned to Patchogue. Salem R. had previously made a snug fortune in New York. . The brothers are sons of the late Captain Salem Furman, who was engaged in the coasting trade and died in Puerto Rico. Joel Furman, brother to the captain is a large land owner in this section now. The family are of the best in the country. John L Furman is an old all round sport and is at present the Suffolk county pool champion. In the days of the old Madison Square Garden he appeared in many go-as-you-please races, winning several medals. He was a great admirer of horses and followed the races closely.”
