    Notes
    • From the Santa Barbara News Press, 26 Nov 1937:

      Street Sweeper's 'Overtime' Costly

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 25 (AP) Because George Serles, 63, city street sweeper, insisted upon brushing up some debris, although he had Thanksgiving day off, he landed in a hospital.

Serles filled up on turkey, like nearly everybody else, and then went for a stroll. Noting trash at an intersection, he rolled out his pushcart and began to work.

Three men, who apparently had had liquor with their turkey, tried to appropriate his pushcart when he resisted, he told police, one of them stabbed him in one shoulder and side. [5]
