Ira G. Thompson, City Aide, Dies
Ira Gilbert Thompson, secretary of the San Francisco city retirement board, died yesterday morning at Central Emergency Hospital of a heart attack. Mr. Thompson was 62 years old. He had been suffering from heart trouble for several months. He complained of feeling ill at his desk and was taken to the hospital where he succumbed a few minutes later.
The city official, administrator of the $175,000,000 retirement fund for city employes, was born in Hollister. After education in lower schools there he studied at the University of California for three years and left to enlist during World War I.
HELD STATE POST
After a varied business career, he went into public service, first as a deputy chief accounting officer in the State Relief Administration.
In 1941 he was appointed secretary to the board of trustees of the San Francisco War Memorial, a post he held until he became secretary in the retirement system on June 1 1946.
Activity in fraternal and service organizations was his major hobby. He was a past commander of Parkside Post 505, American Legion, and past chef de gare of Voiture 27, 40 et 8 Societe, as well as auditor of the San Francisco Guild for Crippled Children and annually an officer in the United Crusade. Other affiliations included Parkside Improvement Club, San Benito Lodge 211, San Francisco Trowel Club, San Francisco Lodge No. 1, Scottish Rite of Freemasonry; Islam Temple, A.A.O.N.M.S of San Francisco; San Francisco Federation of Municipal Employes, Municipal Finance Officers Association, Municipal Executive Em ployes Association and the University of California Alumni Association.
WIFE SURVIVES.
He lived at 334 Noriega St. with his wife, the former Evelyn Francis Velard, whom he wed here in 1921.
Also surviving are a son. Ira of New York City, and two daugnters, Mrs. Lois Gail Dykes and Judy Ann Thompson, both of San Francisco. Mayor Christopher expressed the city's regrets, saying: "He was an excellent public servant, very competent and a kindly man. The city has suffered a great loss." American Legion services will be held at 8 o'clock tonight at the Halsted and Company chapel, 1123 Sutter Stand last rites under Masonic auspices will take place there at 11 a. m. tomorrow. Burial will be in Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Bruno..
