Alvin D. Ebi, Prominent Local Merchant, Dies Death Today Result of Appendicitis Alvin D Ebi, prominent Hollister jeweler and lifelong member of this community, died suddenly this morning of complications resulting from an operation for appendicitis. News of his death came as a shock to the entire community, for he had been in good health until he suffered an attack of acute appendicitis Tuesday. He underwent an emergency operation Tuesday at the Hazel Hawkins Hospital where he died this morning at 8 o’clock. Ebi was born at Paicines, May 27, 1880, and he spent his entire lifetime in this county. He was connected with the jewelry business here since he was a youth of 18 and for the past 20 years has been the proprietor of Ebi’s Jewelry Store. He took an active interest in civic affairs, serving two terms as mayor of Hollister in the 1920s. He resigned as city clerk in 1920 to accept the office of mayor, and was reelected as Mayor in 1922. He was succeeded in 1924 by J. R. Pendergrass. In 1928 he resigned from the Council and was succeeded by Ray Hubbell. Ebi was also prominent in the Christian Church holding an office in the church for the past 5 years. He was at the time of his death a member of the Masonic Lodge, Mound Lodge, I.O.O. F., and Woodmen of the World. He is survived by his widow, Grace Ebi; his mother, Mrs. Flora Ebi; a daughter, Mrs. Vivian Byrne of Santa Cruz, and a grandson, John Austin Byrne. His was the third death in the family during the past year, for his only brother, Arch Ebi died January 31, 1941, and his father, U. A. Ebi died October 11, 1941. Friends are invited to attend his funeral service, which will be held Monday at 2 p.m. from the Black Cooper Mortuary. The service will be in charge of the Rev. Walter Girdner of the Christian Church. Interment will be at the IOOF cemetery. Hollister Freelance, April 25, 1942.
