Walter Byrne of Santa Cruz Dies at 72
Walter C. Byrne, 72, one of Santa Cruz’ most prominent business men, died yesterday at his Union street home as he was planning to leave to attend a business meeting.
Byrne was a native of Jackson, Mich. He was a member of a prominent family in that city and came to Santa Cruz about 40 years ago. In this city and uncle, the late Charles B. Byrne, resided and had half interest in the hardware store of Heath and Byrne.
Walter and his brother, George, purchased the business and the firm of Byrne Bros., in 1898. It has been one of the leading businesses in the city. For some time Mr. Byrne has been unable to be in the store, however.
In 1899 he married Mabel Drennan, a member of an early Santa Cruz family.
In fraternal life he was a member of Santa Cruz lodge No. 38 Free and Accepted Masons, and of Santa Cruz lodge of Elks. His religious affiliation was with the First Congregational church.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mabel Drennan Byrne, and sons and daughters, John Drennan Byrne and Gilbert Byrne, who are connected with the hardware store; Miss Barbara Byrne of the high school faculty of San Diego, Mireiam, wife of Paul Kerr of Daly City, and Louise, wife of George W. Shreve of Atherton. Two sisters, Susan Byrne of the faculty of San Jose State College; Josephine Byrne of San Jose, and a brother, Robert Byrne of San Rafael, also survive.
Funeral services will be held from the Wessendorf mortuary tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be in the I.O.O.F. cemetery.
