Sunnyside- Abraham Sheinaus, the oldest pensioner of the Consolidated Edison Co., died suddenly Saturday of a heart attack. He was 96.
Sheinaus retired from the company in 1933 after having been superintendent of its storage battery division for 25 years. At the time of his retirement, his duties included supervision of the emergency lighting system for all of Manhattan.
Sheinaus was active in many other fields besides electrical work. He had been an inventor, portrait painter, wood-carver and sculptor. Only several days before his death, he was working on an intricate piece of sculpture.
Born in Bessarabia, Sheinaus came to the United States in 1892. He worked as a portrait painter until 1901 when he turned to the field of electricity. He played a large role in the development of the electrical automobile, test driving many new models during the early 1900s. He also was a pioneer in the home use of electricity. He formed a company that installed electrical bells. Sheinaus helped develop a process for the multiple manufacture of phonograph records. Many of his improvements in the storage battery were patented during the early 1900s and after he joined the New York Edison Co., a forerunner of the Consolidated Edison Co.
Shortly before the death of his wife, Fannie, in 1949, Sheinaus and his wife celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. He was a member of many Jewish philanthropic organizations and was a founder of the Hebrew National Orphanage Home in Tuckahoe, N.Y.
At the time of his death, he was living at 39-19 45th St., Sunnyside. He was buried yesterday at the Washington Cemetery, Brooklyn. He is survived by one son, Louis; three daughters, Mrs. Esther Lerner of Miami Beach, Fla., Mrs. Rose Karshmer of Highland Park, N.J., and Mrs. Elizabeth Scheiner of Sunnyside; eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren.Linked to
