Text George Byrne, Member Of Old S. C. Family, World War I Veteran, Dies

Following an illness of but a few weeks George Griffing Byrne, well known throughout the entire Monterey bay area, died in a local hospital Monday afternoon. He had been associated with the Coast Counties Gas and Electric company since 1930, following his work with relatives in the Byrne Brothers hardware store on Pacific avenue, a business which his father and uncle had formed.

Mr. Byrne was born in Alameda, July 20, 1894. He was graduated from the University of California, where he majored in forestry and he followed up his study in work for the state for a while. In World War I he was with the ambulance corps in France.

His first work for the Coast Counties beginning in 1930 was in the sales department which took him over much of the Monterey Bay area. He served in that work until 1941 when he became gas heating engineer for the company. He then went into the tabulating department, and his last work was in the drafting department. He won six "suggestion awards" carrying cash prizes, while carrying out his work.

Mr. Byrne's hobby, pottery, gave him much pleasure and he was a ceramic artist of skill, designing and firing his work.

He was much in demand as a song leader and a competent master of ceremonies for many occasions. He was active in the Toastmasters club, past song leader for the Kiwanis club; past chaplain of the Santa Cruz lodge of Elks and a member of the American Legion. He was greatly interested in young people, and was leader of a Boy Scout troop several years ago.

He leaves his wife, Mrs. Josephine Byrne and mother, Mrs. Helen Byrne, and daughter, Beverly Byrne. Also the following sisters, Mrs. Earl Olmsted of Oakland, Mrs. Donald Stikeman of Concord, Mrs. William Stone of Marysville and Walter G. Byrne of Oakland; Carlton Byrne of Los Angeles; Howard Byrne of Carmel, brothers.

    Funeral arrangements pending at Wessendorfs.
