Hugh Brown, a sports columnist who was also assigned to the Philadelphia Eagles beat for more than 20 years with the now-defunct Philadelphia Bulletin, has been named the winner of the 15th annual Dick McCann Memorial Award.

The award, given for long and distinguished reporting in the field of pro football, is presented by the Pro Football Writers of America; whose 1983 president is Cooper Rollow of the Chicago Tribune. The award honors the memory of McCann, the first director of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, who died in 1967. The plaque honoring the annual winners hangs permanently in the pro grid showplace.

Brown will be officially presented with the award at the Mayor's Breakfast, the kickoff event for the 1983 Pro Football Hall of Fame weekend in Canton. The breakfast will be held on July 29, one day in advance of the enshrinement ceremonies for the 1983 class of new members. These ceremonies highlight every annual celebration.

A native of Edinburgh, Scotland, Brown came to this country when he was five. He attended New York University but, alter two years, quit school to give journalism a try His interest in this profession had been fueled when, as a youngster, he read a series of stories on the experiences of a cub reporter.

Hugh sent applications to more than 100 newspapers before being offered a job with the Waterbury, Conn., Republican. Other career stops found Hugh with the Manchester, N.H., Union-Leader, the New Haven Register, the Hartlord Courant and the Philadelphia Record before his tenure with the Bulletin began in 1945.

Until he became assistant sports editor at the time he joined the Bulletin, most of Hugh's prior newspaper experience has been in non-sports areas. But he took to sports in a big way and soon was writing six columns a week, in addition to his coverage of the Eagles' activities. In the years immediately preceding his retirement in 1971, he was a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame's prestigious Board of Selectors.

At 76, Brown becomes not only the first retired writer, but also the oldest, ever to honored with the McCann award. He and his wife, Virginia, now live in retirement in Savannah, Tenn.
