    • Obituary: From Port City Daily: Whether she was stationed in a foreign country or chose to travel with her family, Elizabeth Trapnell King, known as Bettie to her friends and family, was always on the go. She brought home plenty of “knick-knacks” over the years like little fans and pottery, but there was one artifact she never left a city without: a postcard. Mrs. King, of Wilmington, died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2014. She was 93. Mrs. King and her husband bonded over their love of traveling and, because of his career in the U.S. Marine Corps, she and her family explored the different states and countries where he was stationed. Most fondly remembered by her daughter, Ginger Wells, are the two years she spent in the Philippine Islands. Mrs. Wells remembers taking the ferry across to Manila in the Philippines with her mother to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables. Mrs. King took her children to see where the Bataan Death March was held during WWII, traded sweaters for unique hand-carved wooden sculptures and traveled in brightly painted military jeeps to buy papayas and mangoes. Mrs. Wells said most of the learning she and her siblings had was done through experience, saying “we did things we couldn’t learn in a book.” Her parents’ love of traveling helped her appreciate other cultures. Mrs. King and her husband continued traveling throughout their lives, exploring all over the United States and abroad. They participated in Elderhostels, including once staying at a convent where they learned about food and its preparation. “It wasn’t just touring beautiful sights, it was also learning neat off-the-wall things,” Mrs. Wells said. Mrs. Wells said her mother continued to thrive in her love of adventure in her older years. She enjoyed sailing with her son at Masonboro Island, climbing aboard a 14-foot sailboat and collecting shells. The one artifact Mrs. King never came home without was a postcard. Sometimes she’d write to her children and send them home; other times, she simply purchased a postcard with a photo of where they’d been to bring home and show her family. In honor of her traveling, Mrs. King’s granddaughter, Christy Shi, is putting together a map for her funeral service. Using ribbons attached to the postcards collected over the years, Ms. Shi will highlight all the places Mrs. King visited throughout her life. She was born June 5, 1921, in Baltimore, the daughter of the late Joseph Trapnell, III and Elizabeth Sellman Trapnell and was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Lt. Col. William Joseph King; brothers, Joseph Trapnell, IV “Trap” and Dr. Henry R. Trapnell; son, Richard W. King; and grandson, Jason Wells. Surviving are her daughters, Mrs. J. Stephen Shi (Betsy), of Alto, Ga. and Mrs. Robert J. Wells, Jr. (Ginger), of Hampstead; son, James T. King, of Chicago; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, 2014, at St John’s Episcopal Church, Wilmington. Interment will follow at the Hallock Memorial Garden adjacent to the church. Family will receive friends immediately after in Elebash Hall. The family wishes to thank her wonderful team of caregivers for their special love and care that enabled her to remain in the comfort of her own home as her health declined and the staff of Lower Cape Fear Hospice, where she spent her final days. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. John’s Episcopal Church – Hallock Memorial Garden, 1219 Forest Hills Drive, Wilmington, NC 28403 or to Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 1414 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC 28401.
