TRAPNELL, SCIENCE GROUP OFFICIAL, DIES Edward Raleigh Trapnell, 81, a retired public affairs specialist with the National Science Foundation who also had worked for the Atomic Energy Commission and the International Atomic Energy Commission, died of liver failure Aug. 18 at his home in Arlington. Mr. Trapnell was born in Romney, W.Va. He graduated from Virginia Military Institute. During World War II, he served in the Army and was stationed in Washington and Europe. After the war, he returned here and worked in the information field for the Farm Security Administration, the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration and the AEC. From 1957 to 1959, he was in Vienna, Austria, on the staff of the IAEC. In 1961, after a period in private business, Mr. Trapnell became a special assistant to the secretary of the Air Force. From 1963 to 1967, he worked for Parsons Engineering Co. He then joined the National Science Foundation, where he retired in 1974. In the early 1970s, Mr. Trapnell helped found General Technology Applications, an engineering development company in Manassas, and served on its board of directors until 1990. He also co-authored a history of the AEC. Mr. Trapnell was a member of the Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Alexandria, the National Press Club, the American Nuclear Society and the VMI Foundation. His first wife, May Cocke Trapnell, died in 1979. Survivors include his wife, Margaret Hoover Trapnell of Arlington and Nantucket, Mass.; three children from his first marriage, Catherine T. Wheeler of Arlington, Elizabeth T. Rawlings of Iowa City; and Susan T. Moritz of Seattle; three stepchildren, Steven Rowles of Monson, Mass., Andrew Rowles of Thetford Center, Vt., and Benjamin Rowles of Nanatucket; and nine grandchildren.
