• Obituary: From The Daily Sentinel, Grand Junction, CO, 23 Aug 1968: Marshall Barteau Marshall Barteau, 78, of 1315 N. Seventh St. died about 8:50 p.m. Thursday at Osteopathic Hospital. He had been in ill health some time but was hospitalized only briefly. A retired landscape gardener, Mr. Barteau had lived here since 1956, when he moved from Glenside, Pa. He was born on Feb, 2, 1890, at Sag Harbor, N. Y., spent his childhood there, graduating from Sag Harbor High School. He was married at Orient N. Y. on May 4, 1914, to Annie Belle Latham, who survives. He is also survived by ,a daughter, Mrs. Mark (Ruby) Holloway of Grand Junction and two grandchildren. Mr. Barteau was member of the Calvary Bible Church..

Notes:

Was married three times with two (living) children by each marriage. He was tall (6 ft.), dark, good looking, very religious. He was a boat builder and when first married lived at East Haven Conn. Before that he worked at Shelter Island where his first wife came from. After he sold the Brookhaven place in 1871, he and his family lived in Patchogue where he owned a shipyard on the west bank of the creek. William was the last owner of "the old Barteau place".

William married MATTHEWS, Martha on 4 Jul 1855. Martha (daughter of MATTHEWS, William and WILLIAMS, Joanna) was born about 1829 in Redding, CT; died on 16 Feb 1866 in Galveston, Texas; was buried on 17 Feb 1866 in Pottersfield Cemetery, Galveston, Texas. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Notes:

Martha’s burial record of 1866 states she was buried in Pottersfield cemetery. Of the two Potters Fields in Galveston (Confederate & Black), the date of her death (1866) suggests she was buried in Confederate Pottersfield. After the 1900 hurricane & flood, this cemetery was covered by Oleander Cemetery. If she ever had a headstone, it's unlikely it would still exist, as no family resided in Galveston after her death.

Both he and his wife died at an early age from "galloping consumption" and were buried in the family graveyard near the house until their son, Wm. Marshall Barteau, had the bodies moved and reburied in Patchogue when he sold the place in the late 1860s and moved his family to River Ave, Patchogue, LI.

According to notes from Edna Valentine, Francis and Sarah were originally buried in the Barteau Cemetery, and later moved by their son, William, to Cedar Grove in Patchogue.

"Mrs. Corwin(sp), "cousin Maria", told me that Francis and Sarah were very fond of books and in the evening would sit in the doorway and read to each other. They lived in the "Old Barteau Place" on South County Road at top of hill in Brookhaven. She also said that people would come to Sall for the recipes because she was known all over as a very good cook."
