Sportswriter Hugh Brown; Covered Eagles
Newspaper columnist Hugh Brown, who covered Philadelphia sports for two decades died yesterday. He was 76.
Brown worked as a wire editor for the Philadelphia Record before its acquisition by the now-defunct Bulletin. At the Bulletin, Brown held a number of posts but specialized in covering the Eagles. He retired in the mid-1970s.
He also helped former Eagles quarterback and coach Norm Van Brocklin write a book on how to throw a forward pass.
Brown, a resident of Savannah, Tenn, is survived by his second wife, Virginia; his sone, Noel; and a daughter, Nancy Daughterty.

Hugh Brown, 78, former columnist and assistant sports editor of the Evening Bulletin, died Wednesday in Savannah, Tenn. He moved there after retiring in 1971.
A veteran of the business, he had worked for a number of newspapers, including the Chicago Sun and the Hartford Courant. He joined the staff of the Philadelphia Record in 1936, and he was the paper's telegraph editor when it ceased operation in 1948. He moved to the Bulletin.
He covered the Philadelphia Eagles for the newspaper for more than 20 years. He retired shortly after he was taken off the beat.
Surviving are his wife, Virginia; son, Noel; daughter, Nancy Dougherty; three grandchildren; two sisters, and a brother. Services are today at the Shackelford Funeral Home in Savannah. He will be buried there..
