- Obituary: From Santa Cruz Sentinel, 01 Feb 1940 Mrs. Pacific Guild Nichols, Pioneer, Dies Succumbs To Heart Attack After 83 Years Of Residence Here A life that had practically spanned the history of Santa Cruz as a city ended last night with the death of Mrs. Pacific Guild Nichols, 83. She succumbed at her home from heart trouble after a short Illness. She was born April 6, 1858. in the family home which was then on Front street. Having spent nearly all of her life here, Mrs. Nichols had a knowledge of the community equalled by few if any living residents. In the early days her father operated a dairy at Mission street and Fair avenue, his land extending toward the old race track. At the age of 15 she graduated from Mission Hill school and entered San Jose State Normal school to become one of the first graduates. She took the teachers' examination in the same class as J. W. Linscott, who afterward was county and then city superintendent of schools. Mrs. Nichols taught at the San Andreas school for some time. Some time ago she attended the 50th anniversary of her San Jose graduating class, and was one of four living members. Church Connections As a child she attended the Congregational Sunday school, although her family later joined the Baptist church. Since her father owned most of the property on the south side of Locust street hill, he presented the church with a lot which adjoined a residence now standing in the rear of the F. D. Baldwin place. Her father was a deacon of the Baptist church for many years. Mrs. Nichols united with the First Congregational church and served for a number of years as deaconess. She was a member of the Mission group of the Congregational Women's club. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Lois Drennan, and a granddaughter, Mrs. Lois Banti of Geyserville. Funeral arrangements are pending at the Wessendorf Mortuary.
