    • Obituary: From the Selma Enterprise, 10 May 1945 (page 1): George J Nees, Early Resident of Selma Word has been received here of the death in Long Beach on May 2 of George J. Nees, an early resident of Selma, at the age of 91 years, nine months and twenty-eight days. He was born in Davidson County, Tennessee, July 4, 1853. When Mr. Nees was a boy his parents moved to Missouri where he married Miss Sarah Matthews of Salem Mo, a sister of the late T. B. Matthews of Selma. His first employment was with a surveying crew engaged in surveying a line for a new railroad as a railway expressman. He resigned this position and moved with his family to Selma in March. 1885. Soon after his arrival in Selma, Mr. Nees was appointed local agent for the Wells Fargo Express Company, a position which he held for over fifteen years. In addition to his duties with the express company, he developed an extensive real estate and insurance business. About 1906, Mr. Nees resigned his position with the express company and moved his real estate and insurance business to Fresno, where it was conducted successfully until about 1922 retired and moved to Southern California, where he lived alternately with his two daughters. Mr. Nees was a member of the Fourth of July Club, a national organization formed by the late George M. Cohan, who was also born on July 4. Membership is limited to those who were born on the National Holiday. Mr. Nees is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Jack T. Bate of Burbank and Mrs. Norma Pulliam of Long Beach. Mrs. Nees died several years ago. Mr. Nees was a member of the Presbyterian Church. A minister of that denomination officiated at the funeral services. Burial was in the Grand View Memorial Park, Glen- dale

    Reason for the end of her marriage to Roy Pulliam is unclear, but her passport application in 1921 notes that her doctor insists she must go to South America for health reasons, and that she has been confined to her bed. In her 1930 census, she lists herself as ‘widow’, though Roy has remarried. In 1940 census, she is divorced.

    Norma married PULLIAM, Roy on 30 Jun 1903 in St. Paul Church, Fresno, Fresno, CA, USA, and was divorced before 1924. Roy (son of PULLIAM, Charles Irwin and DRENNAN, Emily Jane) was born on 21 Feb 1880 in Illinois; died on 29 Mar 1948 in Fresno Community Hospita, Fresno, Fresno, CA USA; was buried in Sugar Creek Cemetery, Ball, Sangamon, IL USA.
