    • Obituary: From the Princeton Alumni Weekly: It is with deep regret that word has been received of the sudden and unexpected death of Wally Trapnell on June 9, 1943. After leaving college Wally worked in the oil fields of Oklahoma and Texas, dressing tools and roustabouting for various oil companies and contractors. He then worked in Venezuela for eighteen months as an engineer for the Lago Petroleum Col, but had to return at the end of that time because of ill health. He then became connected with the Elkhorn Coal Co. in Estill, Ky, and Fort Wayne Ind. For the past ten years, until enlistment in the Air Corps, he had been connected with Dowell Inc. at Midland Tex, and at Bakersfield, Calif, where he had charge of acidizing oil wells for various oil companies. In 1935 he married Georgina Crabbe of Toms River, N.J., who survives him. He enlisted in the Air Corps in 1942 and was stationed at the bombardier school in Midland, Tex. He was later transferred to the Radio School at Madison, Wis, and from there to Pueblo, Colo, where he was connected with the signal corps division of the Air Corps. Esquire article on Thomas John Hall Trapnell

    March, 1943

    Salute to Tom Trapnell, D.S.C.
West Point grid star who wanted to be preacher, became instead hero of the bridge at Rosario
    by A. PAUL MEKTON

On January 22, 1942, from his field headquarters in the Philippines, General Douglas MacArthur announced the award of the Distinguished Service Cross to Major T.J. Hall Trapnell, Cavalry. The communique from General MacArthur stated:

Major Trapnell, who is a former football hero of the United States Military Academy, matched his brilliant gridiron career with outstanding exploits on the battlefield. The action for which Major Trapnell was decorated took place at Rosario in La Union province on December 22, 1941, while his cavalry unit was engaged in rear-guard operations. During concentrated enemy fire from tanks and infantry, Major Trapnell remained between the hostile force and his own troops and set fire to a truck on a bridge. He waited until the bridge was in flames before leaving the scene in a scout car. He then retired slowly with the rear elements of his organization, picked up wounded soldiers and rallied his men. With complete disregard for his personal safety, Major Trapnell delayed the hostile advance and set an inspiring example to his entire regiment.

We have only to go back to his family antecedents for the elements that produced Major Trapnell, D.S.C. His grandfathers, on both paternal and distaff sides were rebel troopers in the Civil War, one of them in General Ashby's cavalry. His grandmother's brother, Thomas White, was on Stonewall Jackson's staff. Of the present generation of the family that includes twenty-nine men, seventeen are in the United States armed forces, ranging in rank from Colonel Trapnell himself to a corporal. The eldest, brother, Joseph Trapnell, 3rd, served in the United States Navy during the World War on the transport Zuiderdijk and was wounded in action. Another brother, Commander Walter Scott Trapnell, was graduated from Annapolis in 1920 and is now port captain in Balboa, Panama. A cousin, Lieutenant Commander Frederick M. Trapnell, a Navy flyer and crack pilot, took part in the flight of 18 bombers from San Diego to Honolulu in 1938.

Called Hall by his family, Tom Trapnell was born in Yonkers in 1902 and began making football history in the Mount Hebron Grammar School in Upper Montclair, N.J. where he early learned to go up against odds without flinching. A game had been booked with the jayvee team of a neighboring school. When the opposing team came on the field, Hebron's coach spotted a player of the first team in the jayvee lineup. The coach protested, but young Trapnell said: "Aw, let him play. We don't care." Then on the first play after the kick-off, the ringer, carrying the ball, came around end. Tom, playing halfback, made a flying tackle. The ringer was out!

When Tom was ready for high school, his grandfather, Joseph Trapnell, a trustee of Episcopal High School, Alexandria, Virginia, got him a partial scholarship. He went in for track, basketball, lacrosse and football, and his third year he was captain of the eleven. It was during the years at Episcopal High that the influence of his ministerial relatives induced him to plan to become an Episcopal minister. A great-grandfather, grandfather and two uncles were Episcopal ministers.

However, Major C.D. Daly, football coach at West Point, sold him on the idea of trying for an appointment to the Academy. He succeeded in gelling an alternate appointment, and during the interim, Tom and some of his high school friends served as a temporary pickup crew for his brother Joe, who was port steward and purchasing agent for the Baltimore Steamship Company, sailing to Caribbean ports on the S.S. Coelleda and the S.S. Lake Fauquier as ordinary seamen.

Subsequently he took the competitive examination and won the appointment to West Point, entering the Academy from New Jersey in 1923. A two-letter man, outstanding in both football and lacrosse, he was also Phi Beta Kappa, president of his class for three years, teacher in the Sunday school to which children of the post were sent, and president of the Y.M.C.A. The West Point year book of 1927 said of him: "For the class and for the Academy, he has been a zealous worker, but towards his own advancement he has taken a nonchalant attitude -- the attitude of the truly unselfish comrade-in-arms. He is one who thinks first, acts quickly and wisely, and of whom it can never be said that he boasts."

At the end of his leave after he was graduated in 1927, Tom was sent to Monterey, California, with the calvary. There he took up polo and became a star. In 1929, he married Miss Alyse Snow in Fresno. She is now living in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, having been evacuated from the Philippines in May, 1942.

In 1939 Trapnell was sent to the Philippines at the request of General MacArthur, who likes the football type of officer. With the fall of Bataan he was reported captured by the Japs. From a passenger returning on the Gripsholm, the family heard that "The Kid", as he was known to them, was a prisoner in Tarlac prison —- emaciated and drawn with prison pallor and malnutrition. Neither his mother, Mrs. Laura Trapnell who lives in Baltimore, nor any other member of his family has heard from him since the war started.

Thomas married SNOW, Alys Julie on 1 Jun 1929 in Fresno, CA. Alys (daughter of SNOW, Charles Sherman and MCCUNE, Hulda) was born on 27 Aug 1906 in Fresno, California; died on 21 Jan 1953. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    • Obituary: Los Angeles Times, Feb 4, 1999 Coles Trapnell; Television Writer Produced 'Maverick' February 04, 1999 |MYRNA OLIVER | TIMES STAFF WRITER Coles Trapnell, early television writer and producer whose series included "Maverick," has died at age 88. Trapnell, also a longtime story editor at Universal Studios who taught script writing at L.A. Valley College, died Friday of a heart attack at a retirement home in Los Angeles. In the mid-1950s, Trapnell served as story editor of the classic live television series "Four Star Playhouse," a collaboration of performers Charles Boyer, Ida Lupino, David Niven and Dick Powell. "With the number of dramatic shows on TV increasing each year," Trapnell told The Times in 1954, "competition for good stories is now a dead serious business." In those years Trapnell selected 80 scripts a year to supply "Four Star" and two half-hour shows, "The Star" and "The Story." In addition to currying known Hollywood writers, Trapnell sought top-quality material in UCLA theater arts classes and trade publications. From 1959 to 1962, Trapnell wrote his own stories and produced Warner Bros.' "Maverick," which launched James Garner as a star. Trapnell also wrote for the Western series "Lawman" and "Yancy Derringer." A native of New York, Trapnell was educated at Virginia Military Institute and New York University and began his career as a journalist on the Glen Cove Record. He moved to Hollywood in 1936 as a reader at RKO and then worked for 20th Century Fox as story editor and associate producer until 1953. He was story editor at Universal from 1962 until his retirement in 1975. In 1966, Trapnell wrote a well-received book titled "Teleplay," a guide for aspiring scriptwriters. Survivors include two daughters, Sarah Trapnell Byrne of Palo Alto and Jane Trapnell Marino of New York, three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A memorial service is scheduled at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 14, in Westwood Memorial Park. The family has asked that any memorial contributions be made to the American Heart Assn.

    • Obituary: From Port City Daily: Whether she was stationed in a foreign country or chose to travel with her family, Elizabeth Trapnell King, known as Bettie to her friends and family, was always on the go. She brought home plenty of “knick-knacks” over the years like little fans and pottery, but there was one artifact she never left a city without: a postcard. Mrs. King, of Wilmington, died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2014. She was 93. Mrs. King and her husband bonded over their love of traveling and, because of his career in the U.S. Marine Corps, she and her family explored the different states and countries where he was stationed. Most fondly remembered by her daughter, Ginger Wells, are the two years she spent in the Philippine Islands. Mrs. Wells remembers taking the ferry across to Manila in the Philippines with her mother to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables. Mrs. King took her children to see where the Bataan Death March was held during WWII, traded sweaters for unique hand-carved wooden sculptures and traveled in brightly painted military jeeps to buy papayas and mangoes. Mrs. Wells said most of the learning she and her siblings had was done through experience, saying “we did things we couldn’t learn in a book.” Her parents’ love of traveling helped her appreciate other cultures. Mrs. King and her husband continued traveling throughout their lives, exploring all over the United States and abroad. They participated in Elderhostels, including once staying at a convent where they learned about food and its preparation. “It wasn’t just touring beautiful sights, it was also learning neat off-the-wall things,” Mrs. Wells said. Mrs. Wells said her mother continued to thrive in her love of adventure in her older years. She enjoyed sailing with her son at Masonboro Island, climbing aboard a 14-foot sailboat and collecting shells. The one artifact Mrs. King never came home without was a postcard. Sometimes she’d write to her children and send them home; other times, she simply purchased a postcard with a photo of where they’d been to bring home and show her family. In honor of her traveling, Mrs. King’s granddaughter, Christy Shi, is putting together a map for her funeral service. Using ribbons attached to the postcards collected over the years, Ms. Shi will highlight all the places Mrs. King visited throughout her life. She was born June 5, 1921, in Baltimore, the daughter of the late Joseph Trapnell, III and Elizabeth Sellman Trapnell and was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Lt. Col. William Joseph King; brothers, Joseph Trapnell, IV “Trap” and Dr. Henry R. Trapnell; son, Richard W. King; and grandson, Jason Wells. Surviving are her daughters, Mrs. J. Stephen Shi (Betsy), of Alto, Ga. and Mrs. Robert J. Wells, Jr. (Ginger), of Hampstead; son, James T. King, of Chicago; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, 2014, at St John’s Episcopal Church, Wilmington. Interment will follow at the Hallock Memorial Garden adjacent to the church. Family will receive friends immediately after in Elebash Hall. The family wishes to thank her wonderful team of caregivers for their special love and care that enabled her to remain in the comfort of her own home as her health declined and the staff of Lower Cape Fear Hospice, where she spent her final days. • Also Known As: Bucky / Buck
    • Education: Polytechnic Institute and Johns Hopkins University
    • Obituary: From The Baltimore Sun, 13 June 2014: Franklin Waters "Buck" Trapnell Jr., a retired Army colonel who served in Vietnam, died of a heart attack May 31 while visiting family near Richmond, Va. The former Roland Park resident was 77. Born in Baltimore and raised on Lake Avenue in Cedarcroft, he was the son of Franklin Waters Trapnell, an attorney who became an Office of Strategic Services and Central Intelligence Agency officer. His mother was Emily Willson Rieman Smith, a homemaker and volunteer. According to an autobiographical sketch, he spent much of his youth in Berlin, Germany, and Vienna, Austria, after World War II during the military occupation. "He routinely, and unofficially, assisted his father with his intelligence work," said his granddaughter, Alexa Warthen of Philomont, Va. "He was a courier, sabotaged car batteries, debriefed refugees, changed out wiretap batteries and collected wiretap recordings. "He used the Vienna city sewer system to do this work. He stood guard for East German defectors and used his father's pistol. He had an unorthodox upbringing and developed a remarkably open mind and had an exceptional grasp of adaptive tactics." After returning to Baltimore, he enrolled at Polytechnic Institute but left school to join the Maryland National Guard and serve in the 29th Division. He later studied at the Johns Hopkins University and was acting head of its Reserve Officers Training Corps for a year. After serving in the National Guard, he enlisted in the Army in 1961 and trained as a light infantryman and attended parachute school. While at Fort Bragg, he completed Special Forces qualification as a weapons specialist. He also trained in communications, demolitions, medical work and intelligence. After attending Officer Candidate School, he was commissioned as an infantry officer. He served in Vietnam from July 1965 to August 1966 and participated in the Battle of Ia Drang Valley during the Pleiku campaign. "He was a hard-nosed, tactically savvy commander and a genuinely caring mentor," said his granddaughter, who is a former Army captain and flier. She said that that during the second half of his first Vietnam tour, he served as company executive officer and as company commander. While on duty in Vietnam, Colonel Trapnell was photographed and quoted in a 1966 Baltimore Sun article. "We've been here a week, and I guess we're going to be here another," he said in the article, which covered U.S. aircraft bombing a jungle site. Colonel Trapnell returned to the U.S. and became an intelligence officer in the 82nd Airborne Division. He then volunteered for a second tour in Vietnam. "The locals trusted him, and would bring their gold savings and valuables for his safekeeping whenever a Viet Cong attack was in the offing," his granddaughter said. "He in turn recognized the situation as a harbinger of impending attack; he used it to prepare for subsequent attacks. He would later return the valuables." From 1982 to 1984, he commanded the 1st Battalion, 41st Infantry in the 2nd Armored Division at Fort Hood and headed a Bradley Fighting Vehicle training team. Colonel Trapnell taught military science at Hopkins and oversaw ROTC programs at Loyola University Maryland and Towson University, among other colleges in the Mid-Atlantic. He retired in 1990. "He had a near flawless memory and made an unforgettable first impression," said his granddaughter. In retirement, he moved from homes on Wyndhurst Avenue and Overlook Place in North Baltimore to a home he designed and built in Manassas, Va. He cleared the land and worked on the house's construction. "He was the patriarch of the family, and he advised and coordinated many family investments," his granddaughter said. He also built, owned and operated cellphone towers from West Virginia to Wyoming. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Episcopal Church of the Nativity, 419 Cedarcroft Road, where he had been a member. In addition to his granddaughter, survivors include his wife of 55 years, the former Elizabeth Florence Rich Flannery, who performed with the Spotlighters and at the Four Corners Theatre; a daughter, Emily Marilla Trapnell Coryell of Baltimore; a stepson, Michael Flannery of Baltimore; two stepdaughters, Colise Medved of Washington and Agnes Collins Flannery of Walnut Creek, Calif.; seven other grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She graduated in 1982 with her LPN from Southern Maine Vocational Technical Institute. Nancy then worked at various physician offices and clinics, before becoming a pediatric nurse at Maine Medical Center. She worked at Maine Medical from 1987 through 1996 when she retired, but stayed involved by volunteering on the NICU, the lactation clinic, and the Ronald McDonald House. She also volunteered with “Family Friends,” a foster grandparent program serving families with young children, mostly newborns, with multiple medical needs. Nancy left the Portland area in 2012 and moved to Boothbay Harbor to be closer to her daughter. Life brought her many challenges, but through it all Nancy always tried to live by the “Golden Rule,” treating others as she would have wanted to be treated, which served her well. She was predeceased by brother, William Trapnell. She is survived by her children, Mark and wife Alaine of Keene, N.H., Peter and wife Gayle of South Berwick, and Deborah Holmes Beam and husband Jim of Edgecomb; grandchildren, Christopher Holmes, Melissa Michaud, Robert Holmes, Samantha Beam, and Rebecca Beam Kash and husband Jason; and great-grandchildren, Alivia Michaud, Emily Holmes, Ethan Holmes, and Josephine Jade Holmes. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Laura Vogel NICU Fund Development Office, Maine Medical Center, 22 Bramhall St., Portland, ME 04102. This fund helps support children and families (not medical equipment etc.) in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Maine Medical. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Sun., April 2 at the Congregational Church of Boothbay Harbor.

    • Obituary: From CentralMaine.com William C. Trapnell Jr.  1938 - 2015 WINSLOW - William C. Trapnell Jr., 76, passed away at Lakewood Continuing Care Center on May 16, 2015, with family by his side. Bill was born on July 5, 1938, in Glen Ridge, N.J., the son of William Colston Trapnell and Elsa Parma Bartlett.  Upon graduation in 1958 from Germantown Academy in Pennsylvania, he enlisted in the ArmyReserves and was honorably discharged in 1964. He also attended York Jr. College in Pennsylvania and Lewis Hotel Training School in Washington, D.C.  From 1967-1982, Bill worked in managerial positions at Lafayette Town House in Portland, Singer Sewing Machine in Augusta, and Laverdiere's Drug Store and Montgomery Ward, both in Waterville. In 1982, he became a driver license examiner with the State of Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles, moving to commercial licenses (CDL) in 1990. After retirement in 1995, he served as the CDL coordinator at the Skowhegan Driving School for several years.  Bill was an avid reader of historical fiction, particularly military history, and had a keen ear for classical music. When he wasn't attending his daughters' sporting and musical events, or enjoying cookouts at camp with his family, he could always be found reading a book. Bill had an understated but warm sense of humor, and he equally appreciated quick wit and silly antics. He very much enjoyed reading up on politics and current events in the United States and abroad, particularly wherever his daughters travelled. Bill also loved playing cards with friends and travelling with his wife, Cecile. Together they went on regular road trips in New England, Quebec, and the East Coast, as well as a cruise to the Caribbean. He joined his annual Trapnell family reunion at Shrine Mont in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia as often as he could, and was delighted to hear news from his many cousins on the Trapnell side.  Bill was predeceased by his parents, William and Elsa. He is survived by his wife, Cecile (Carter) Trapnell; his daughter Cyndi Trapnell, his daughter Stephanie Trapnell and son-in-law Jesse Blaisdell; his sister Nancy (Trapnell) Holmes; his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; and many cousins; nieces, nephews; and friends.  Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on May 29, 2015, at Notre Dame Church in Waterville. Burial to be performed at a later date at Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery.  Donations can be made in his honor to  American Legion Charities www.legion.org/donate/memorials 1-800-433-3318

  36. 77.  BOWLING, Elizabeth MarshallBOWLING, Elizabeth Marshall Descendancy chart to this point (30.Jane3, 7.William2, 1.Rebecca1) was born on 16 May 1938 in Washington, DC; died on 10 Nov 2010 in San Jose, Santa Clara, CA, USA; was buried on 19 Mar 2011 in Zion Cemetery, Charles Town, Jefferson, WV, USA.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Education: Washington High School in Alexandria, VA, attended Longwood College, graduated from Richmond Polytechnic Institute (Virginia Commonwealth University)
    • Obituary: From San Jose Mercury News: Elizabeth Marshall Bowling Resident of San Jose Aged 72, died on 11/10/2010, in San Jose, California after a long illness. Ms Bowling was the daughter of the late John Travers Bowling and Jane Brockenbrough Trapnell. She was born in Washington, D.C., and grew up in Alexandria, VA, where she graduated from George Washington High School. She attended Longwood College (now Longwood University), and transferred to Richmond Polytechnic Institute (now Virginia Commonwealth University), from which she graduated in 1961. She had a 15 year association with American Airlines, working in reservations; she began her career with American in the Washington, D.C. area, and moved with the company to San Jose, CA. She adopted San Jose as her home, embracing the area with great vigor. She was active in the Olinder Neighborhood Association, and was very active with a Food Group distributing free food to all comers twice weekly from the Olinder Center. Her volunteer work also included working for San Jose Public Television KTEH, 1995-1998. In her retirement, she continued her education, pursuing a Master's Degree in history at San Jose State University, which she was unable to complete due to her failing health. She was however quite proud of her over all GPA at SJSU of 3.94. She was an artistic and creative person, painting in both watercolor and oil, and was very accomplished in knitting, and Crochet, which she learned from her grandmother, Elizabeth Colston Trapnell. However, her great passion was counted cross-stitch. Her mastery of the form extended beyond the many beautiful pieces that she created for family and friends; she designed her own patterns and her work was honored with many prizes in various competitions. Retirement also had her become active with the American Red Cross. Before her failing health got in the way she traveled as a volunteer, finding great satisfaction in helping others. She was called upon to go to Louisiana for many weeks due to Katrina. She was also dispatched to Massachusetts and Alaska for extended periods to render assistance. She is survived by her younger brother, Thomas Clagett Bowling, III, President of Ivy Hill Cemetery Company in Alexandria, Virginia and Karen Lynn Rourk, her San Jose neighbor and friend of more than 30 years, as well as by a large extended family. There will be a private interment of the cremains in the family cemetery with her sister, parents, both sets of grandparents, great grandparents just to list a few of her relatives buried in Zion Episcopal Church Cemetery, Charles Town, WV, 19 March 2011

    • Cause of Death: Malignant Melanoma

    Notes:

From Journal of Hindu & Christian Studies, Vol 17, 2004

PROFESSOR Judson Trapnell was born in 1954 in Wilmington, Delaware. In 1979 he received his B.A. from Maharishi International University. He later graduated from Yale University with a M.Div., and in 1992 he received his Ph.D. from the Department of Religion and Religious Education at The Catholic University of America. From 1997 to 2000 he worked as a Visiting Assistant Professor at Hampden-Sydney in Virginia. In fall 2000 he joined the faculty at the College of St. Benedict / St. John's University in Minnesota in a tenure-track position. Tragically, he resigned that same school year, due to malignant melanoma. He, his wife, and his children returned to Virginia in order to be closer to family and friends. On August 3, 2003, he passed away at his home.

Dr. Trapnell had numerous publications, which appeared in journals such as the Journal of Ecumenical Studies, HinduChristian Studies Bulletin, Dialogue and Alliance, Horizons, and Vidyajyoti. He also presented papers at the conventions of the College Theology Society and the Catholic Theological Society of America. His research focused on classic figures from the Hindu-Christian encounter, such as Swami Abhishiktananda and Raimundo Panikkar. Bede Griffiths was his main inspiration, and in 2001 he published Bede Griffiths: A Life in Dialogue with the State University of New York Press. Trapnell also focused on current affairs, writing on the escalating tensions in India between Hindus and Christians. At the time of his death he was writing a second book, involving the poetry of Swami Abhishiktananda.

Trapnell was both a scholar and a contemplative. In fact, while his research was careful and rigorous it was also a means for him to draw closer to God. He thereby followed in the scholarly ideal of the European monasteries, and this is one of the reasons that he was so delighted to have received employment at St. Benedict / St. John's, both of which house large Benedictine communities. Trapnell's best work probably lay ahead. His family includes his wife, Rosemarie Trapnell, to whom he was married in 1987, and their children, Maria and Grace Trapnell. Judson Trapnell was a kind man, passionate about world religions, and beloved by his students.
