    "My grandmother Fannie (or Faegel) as I remember was a kindly woman. I remember eating at her house with my parents and grandfather and she would carefully clear the crumbs off the table cloth with and knife and catch them in a plate. I was probably somewhere between four or six years old at the time."

    Notes:

    Yiddish name was Frima. Her grandchildren called her Little Bubbie.
    Two different ages for Fannie appear on her death certificate: 79 and 81. Of course, this was filled out by husband Abraham Sheinaus, who has since proven how little appreciation he had for consistent and realistic dates.
    Let's assume that Abraham was born around 1860 (which would make his age at death 97).
    If Fannie were 81, she would have been born around 1868.
    If Fannie were 79, she would have been born around 1870.
    The passenger list of the Anchoria on which she immigrated with her mom, Rose Adler Orel, and daughter “Ester,” 7, and son “Pinkas” (Louis/Foff), 1 month, arrived July 24, 1893 and lists her as 26 years old — meaning she was born around 1867.

    On Aug. 26, 1884, the day Abraham Sheinaus and Fannie Orel married in Tiraspol, this is what happened, according to Abraham's written recollections many years later:

    "The wedding ceremonies took place in the open air in front of the Sinagogue at sun set. And the supper was served in a big place hired for that purpose. After the celebration & dancing, each one left for their quarters, and I was taken to the bride's home into a large room with old broken furniture and 2 beds, one for me and one for the bride. And because we were not allowed as yet to live together, a third sleeping place was prepared on the floor for Eva Hershfield, a girl of about 9 or 10 years to act as a guard."

    Grandmother Rose was def born around 1843, per Anchoria passenger list. So mother Faege would be around 1865.

    father, went to college, although the women married a doctor (Esther), a
    dentist (Rosie) and a lawyer (Lizzie). My father took a pharmacy degree at
    Columbia (they no longer have a college of pharmacy) and a pharm.d. degree at
    some New Jersey college which I don't know. Abe's family knew the Scheiner
    family in Europe, and when they came here, they lived near each other. (My mother,
    Nettie, was a part of the Scheiner clan, 'tho her last name was Pollakoff."

    Louis was known as "Foff" because when his daughter, Ruth, was little, she pronounced the word "father" as "foff.''

    Liz was an air-raid warden during WW II, according to Bill Wolf, next-door neighbor and family friend. During black-outs, Liz made sure that everyone's lights were turned out. She'd patrol the neighborhood to make sure the blackout was complete. Had a white helmet. Bill's parents were friends.
