    Notes:

From the Sidewalk Companion to Santa Cruz:

Walter Graves Byrne (1891 - 1949). Walter Graves Byrne was born in San Francisco, the son of George Griffin Byrne and Helen Graves Byrne. Approximately three years later, the Byrne family, formerly of Jackson, Michigan, settled in Santa Cruz.

Walter Byrne attended the University of California, Berkeley, when the Craftsman aesthetic was prevalent there, graduating in the class of 1914. While a student, he did drafting work for Julia Morgan and John Galen Howard. The Craftsman preference for simplicity, a preference which allows material to become important as design elements, is evident in the buildings in Santa Cruz which can be assigned to him: The Walter Charles Byrne house, 1912, and his own home, 1919.

On returning to Santa Cruz, Byrne found that there were not enough commissions available to support him as an architect. Consequently, he became a teacher of mathematics and mechanical drawing at Santa Cruz High School in 1918. During the years 1921 to 1923, he was a junior partner of architect Allen C. Collins. Their office was located in the New Santa Cruz Theatre Building at the northwest corner of Pacific and Walnut Avenues.

In 1923, Byrne moved to Los Angeles, where he associated with the firm of Ross Montgomery and that of John C. Austin, architect of Los Angeles City Hall, Shrine Auditorium, and the Griffith Park Observatory. Byrne's most important project was the California State Building in the Los Angeles Civic Center. Byrne left Southern California for Oakland in 1942 and worked for Kaiser Industries during the war. He was afterwards employed by John J. Donovan, architect of Oakland Technical High School, the Ina Coolbirth Library, also in Oakland, and a consulting architect for the San Francisco - Oakland Bay Bridge. At the time Byrne also designed an addition to the building which housed Oakland's Little Sisters of the Poor. He continued to practice until three years before his death in 1949.

    Also:

Designed home for Walter Charles Byrne and Mabel Drennan Byrne family at 332 Union Street, Santa Cruz (originally 28 Union Street). Family lore had it that this was a project while he was studying architecture at UC Berkeley, which would fit with his having graduated in 1914 and the home was built in 1912.

Walter married HOLLAND, Agnes Mercer on 31 Dec 1915 in 2256 San Antonio Ave, Alameda, Alameda CA USA. Agnes (daughter of HOLLAND, Dr. Judson and Marietta) was born on 8 May 1889 in Sheep Ranch, California, USA; died on 29 Jun 1978 in Oakland, California, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    • Obituary: From Eureka Times-Standard Ruth Margaret Byrne Anderson Ruth Margaret Byrne Anderson passed away in Arcata on December 31, 2008. She was 88. Ruth began and ended her life near the ocean she loved and was happiest at home. She was born November 8, 1920, to Agnes and Walter Byrne in their Santa Cruz Craftsman style bungalow, which was designed by her architect father, and has been designated an historical landmark. The fourth of nine children, Ruth was raised in the Los Angeles area, graduated from St. Andrew’s High School in Pasadena and attended Pasadena City College. At the onset of World War Two Ruth’s family moved to Oakland, where she worked as a secretary for Kaiser Steel. At the end of the war she met Martin Anderson, a naval officer just back from the Pacific and stationed at Alameda. The couple married in 1947 and Martin returned to school at UC Berkeley on the GI Bill. Eventually Ruth left the workplace for motherhood and by 1965 the couple had six children. The family lived in both Southern and Northern California, settling in the Bay Area city of Livermore in 1969. Martin worked as an inspector for the California Department of Agriculture until his death in 1978 at age 61. Ruth relocated to the North Coast in 1984, after visiting her son William, a student at Humboldt State University. The redwoods reminded her of Santa Cruz. She was active in St. Mary’s parish where she sang in the choir, volunteered at Pacific Union School, and enjoyed cooking, gardening, bird-watching, Bible-study, and reading. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband Martin; her brother Walter Byrne; sisters Marian Byrne and Josephine Byrne; brothers-in-law Glen Philpot, Earle Maixner and Delbert Lebbert; and grandson Charles Christopher Wood. She is survived by her sisters: Harriet Philpot, Roberta Maixner, Elizabeth Lebbert & Patricia Byrne; her brother Thomas (Elizabeth) Byrne; her children: Edward (Marlene) Anderson, Joan (Samuel) Naszady, William (Sandra) Anderson, John Anderson, Mary (Charles) Wood and Robert (Sara) Anderson; her grandchildren: Katherine, Emily & Ethan Naszady; Michelle (Gregg) Pacilio & Benjamin Anderson; Erin & Catherine Wood; Martin, Alexander & Joseph Anderson; and her great grandson Jai Michael Pacilio. A Memorial Service will be held for Ruth at St Mary’s Church in Arcata Saturday January 10th at 1 pm, with interment at St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetary in Livermore, California. The family wishes to thank Linda Newhouse, Dr. David S. Gans, the staff of Mad River Community Hospital and Home Health, Assisted Living Services of Eureka, and St. Mary’s parish for their support of Ruth over the years. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Mary’s Church. Please sign the guestbook at www.times-standard.com, click on obituaries. Published in Eureka Times-Standard on Jan. 8, 2009
