Purchased a cattle ranch in Mexico with his first wife, Elizabeth Swift, a member of the Chicago Swift family. Selling the ranch, they relocated to Chicago where Fernald started a banking career with Fort Dearborn bank. Later became Vice President of Continental Bank. Second wife, Katherine Miller Smith, married in 1933.
