- Obituary: From Friends Intelligencer: VALENTINE: On First month 29th, at the home of her niece Lydia, in Pinkham, South Norwalk, Conn.: Lydia P. (Mott) Valentine, in her 92nd year. This Friend was for very many years a constant reader of the Friends Intelligencer almost up to the time of her death, when her failing sight forced her to give it up. She was the last descendant of an old Long Island Friends' family, was born at the Mott homestead, Wheatly Hills, L. I. The estate was owned by her grandfather, James Mott, who first introduced to the public as the owner, proprietor and operator, of a tow-story miil in which was manufactured linen, woolen goods and carpets. His motive power is familiar to many people still living as original as well as ingenious, being supplied entirely by ocean breezes. He was assisted in his business by his son, Stephen Mott, father of Lydia P. (Mott) Valentine. He lived there until 1840, when he moved to Jericho, L. I., where Lydia lived until her marriage to Hiram P. Perry, a New York, shipbuilder. He died in three years. She subsequently married William M. Valentine, of Roslyn, and lived there until his untimely death. He was assaulted by two negroes on his own lawn while returning from business and died some time later from his injuries. Since his death she made her home in Flushing, Long Island, and removed her certificate of membership to that meeting where she has been a member until the time of her death. William C. Perry, of Darien, is a grandson. "Aunty Lydia," as she was familiarly known, was loved by all who knew her, was very active despite her years, enjoyed her daily papers and her Friends' books. Her death was her life - a peaceful, calm, beautiful sleep. Interment at the Friends' burying ground at Westbury, Long Island.

From History of Queens County
The subject of this memoir was born at Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y., September
23d 1800, and died at the same place, December 28th 1879.
His ancestors were among the earliest settlers in their respective sections.
He was the lineal descendant of George Hewlett, who was actively engaged in the
early settlement of the town of Hempstead, L.I.
John the youngest son, from whom Jacob C. descended and who is designated as
John Hewlett the first, settled at Rockaway. His wife’s name was Mary Smith.
They had a son John, who in the line of descent is called John Hewlett second.
He married Hannah Jackson, daughter of the second Colonel John and Elizabeth
Jackson, who lived at Jerusalem, L.I. After their marriage he bought a tract of
land located in East Woods (now known as Woodbury). Here he settled and remained
till his death, May 5th 1790, in the 88th year of his age. His wife, Hannah J.,
died three years previous, viz, March 3d 1787, in the 90th year of her age.
Their remains rest in a family burying ground situated on a narrow projecting
mound a short distance east of the house now designated as Mount Nebo. The place
is now in the possession, and the ground thus dedicated is to be the burial
place, of the descendants of

born February 17th 1731,who is designated as
John Hewlett the third. He married Sarah Townsend, a daughter of Rumoan and Mary Townsend.

Notes:
My original notes on Henry/Harry, which I believe came from Edna Valentine (I failed to source original info), appeared to have a marriage date for Henry Valentine and Edna Luyster of 21 Dec 1917. However, the NY Times announcement of Edna Luyster’s second marriage in 1921 mentions that her first husband had died in 1917. Moreover, there is a census record for Henry and Edna living together married in Oyster Bay in 1910, stating they had been married five years. Have verified through Brooklyn Eagle Obit that he died 21 Dec 1917.
While I have found Henry/Harry listed in multiple genealogical database as Henry Hewlett Valentine, I’ve yet to see that name properly sourced, and have repeatedly found him listed as Henry Webber Valentine (including his death notice).
Harry was an early automobile enthusiast, and is listed in the 1914 Automobile Owners Directory as the proud owner of a Willys.Henry married LUYSTER, Edna about 1905. Edna (daughter of LUYSTER and Sarah) was born on 27 Feb 1880 in Glen Cove, Nassau, New York, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

- Obituary: Los Angeles Times, Feb 4, 1999 Coles Trapnell; Television Writer Produced 'Maverick' February 04, 1999 |MYRNA OLIVER | TIMES STAFF WRITER Coles Trapnell, early television writer and producer whose series included "Maverick," has died at age 88. Trapnell, also a longtime story editor at Universal Studios who taught script writing at L.A. Valley College, died Friday of a heart attack at a retirement home in Los Angeles. In the mid-1950s, Trapnell served as story editor of the classic live television series "Four Star Playhouse," a collaboration of performers Charles Boyer, Ida Lupino, David Niven and Dick Powell. "With the number of dramatic shows on TV increasing each year," Trapnell told The Times in 1954, "competition for good stories is now a dead serious business." In those years Trapnell selected 80 scripts a year to supply "Four Star" and two half-hour shows, "The Star" and "The Story." In addition to currying known Hollywood writers, Trapnell sought top-quality material in UCLA theater arts classes and trade publications. From 1959 to 1962, Trapnell wrote his own stories and produced Warner Bros.' "Maverick," which launched James Garner as a star. Trapnell also wrote for the Western series "Lawman" and "Yancy Derringer." A native of New York, Trapnell was educated at Virginia Military Institute and New York University and began his career as a journalist on the Glen Cove Record. He moved to Hollywood in 1936 as a reader at RKO and then worked for 20th Century Fox as story editor and associate producer until 1953. He was story editor at Universal from 1962 until his retirement in 1975. In 1966, Trapnell wrote a well-received book titled "Teleplay," a guide for aspiring scriptwriters. Survivors include two daughters, Sarah Trapnell Byrne of Palo Alto and Jane Trapnell Marino of New York, three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A memorial service is scheduled at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 14, in Westwood Memorial Park. The family has asked that any memorial contributions be made to the American Heart Assn.

Rushmore Rowley Valentine, Jr. '51
Rushmore Rowley Valentine, Jr. '51, a former geologist, was born on February 12, 1927, to Rushmore R. '19, an accountant, and Adelaide Jones Valentine, in Brooklyn, NY. He was a nephew of Harvey H. '25 and Joseph C. Valentine '25. Young Rushmore grew up on Long Island, where he was graduated from Friends Academy in Locust Valley. He followed his father and uncles to College Hill in 1947, after serving in the U.S. Army Air Force during the final months and aftermath of World War II. He joined their fraternity, Delta Upsilon, before leaving the Hill after three semesters at the end of 1948.
Rushmore Valentine, who later attended Columbia University, "traveled the world in his early career as a geologist," according to his newspaper obituary. He was with Cities Service Petroleum Co. in Bogota, Colombia, when the College heard from him in 1956. He later settled in the Rochester, NY, area, where he was employed for 25 years by Rochester Products, manufacturers of containers and fuel injection systems, until his retirement in 1992.
The College has only recently learned of Rushmore R. Valentine, Jr.'s death on December 30, 2005. Predeceased by his wife, Nancy B. Valentine, he was survived by two daughters, Beth Quattrociocchi and Susan Schultz, and three grandchildren and a sister.Family/Spouse: Nancy. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

- Obituary: From NY Times 23-Apr-1985 Robert R. Coles, an astronomer and former chairman of the Hayden Planetarium, and an authority on the history of Long Island, died of a heart attack Saturday at Brattleboro (Vt.) Memorial Hospital. He was 77 years old and lived in Glen Cove, L.I. Mr. Coles was chairman of the planetarium from 1951 through 1953. In that period and for many years before, he lectured and presented programs that opened some of the mysteries of the heavens to rapt audiences of children and adults in the planetarium's auditorium at Central Park West and 80th Street. One of his most popular displays, presented in July and August of 1952, was a simulated trip on a rocket to the moon, in which spectators watching the planetarium's domed ceiling were whisked a quarter of a million miles through space for a landing at one of the moon's craters. Mr. Coles, born in Glen Cove, was a direct descendant of a 1668 settler of the community, which was then known as Musketa Cove. Mr. Coles lived in the original Coles homestead, and he served for many years as Glen Cove's official historian. After leaving the planetarium, he wrote widely on the lore and history of Long Island. Among his books were ''The Long Island Indian,'' ''The Geology of Long Island'' and two histories of Glen Cove. Mr. Coles attended Columbia University before joining the department of education at the American Museum of Natural History in 1929 as a lecturer on general science. He became a lecturer at the planetarium in 1936 and was named associate curator in 1945 after serving three years in the Air Force. He was a member of the American Astronomical Society and a Fellow in the Royal Astronomical Society of England. Mr. Coles is survived by his wife, the former Edna May Kempsell; two daughters, the Rev. Constance Coles of Manhattan and Meribelle Coles of Brattleboro; two sons, Franklin A. Coles of Milan, N.Y., and R. Reed Coles Jr. of Springfield, Mass., and three grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 11 A.M. today at the Friends Quaker Meeting in Matinecock, L.I.

He later settled in the Rochester, NY, area, where he was employed for 25 years by Rochester Products, manufacturers of containers and fuel injection systems, until his retirement in 1992.
