  1. 1.  BYRNE, Charles Benjamin was born on 7 Oct 1842 in Michigan; died on 20 Jan 1912 in Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz, California, USA; was buried on 22 Jan 1912 in IOOF Cemetery, Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz Co, CA.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Research Notes: 1900 Census shows Charles Byrne giving his date of birth as Nov 1847. This is problematic, in that his father, George Byrne, supposedly died on Oct 2, 1844. On the 1910 Census, taken in April 1910, his age is listed as 67. This would make sense had he been born in 1842, and for the moment I’m going to assume there is an error in the reading of the 1900 census, and am theorizing he was born in Nov, 1842.

    • Obituary: From the Santa Cruz Evening News 03 Feb 1920 Dr. Don Byrne Passes Away At Los Banos Santa Cruzans generally will be greatly shocked to hear of the death this morning at Los Banos of Dr. Don Byrne, successful young dentist of this city, son of a pioneer family, who recently left for the Merced county town to practice his profession. Dr. Byrne was stricken with double pneumonia a short time ago and it was known during the past few days among his relatives here that his chances for recovery were slight. His devoted mother, to whom he was greatly attached, was sent for last Friday and immediately' left Santa Cruz for Los Banos in an automobile, arriving there at 11 o'clock at night. She was at the bedside when her son breathed his last this morning. Dr. Byrne was stricken with pneumonia about a year ago and at that time his life hung in the balance for a few days before he was out of danger. It is believed that the attack weakened him and he was hardly prepared for this last attack. The sympathy of the entire community will be extended Mrs. Florence Byrne, the mother, in her terrible sorrow. She was only recently preparing to move to Los Banos to make her home with her son who had met with flattering success in his new .field and who had just established himself with Dr. B. H. Bush in a new hospital at Los Banos. A sister of the deceased, Mrs. Roy Cornell, resides in Los Angeles. Walter and George Byrne, the local hardware merchants, are first cousins of the deceased. The father, the late C. B. Byrne of this city, passed away about ten years ago in this city. Dr. Don Byrne was born in Santa Cruz about thirty years ago. From Santa Cruz Evening News 06 Feb 1920 LAST SERVICES For Dr. Don W Byrne Scores of friends were in attendance this afternoon at the funeral of the late Dr. Don W. Byrne, held at the Wessendorf undertaking parlors this afternoon. Rev. A. W. Hare officiated and Mrs. Grace Williamson, accompanied by Mrs. A. W. Hare, sang "Come Ye Disconsolate" with much feeling. Many of the friends present this afternoon had been boy and girl friends of the deceased in his younger Santa Cruz days and many eyes were wet with tears as the services closed. A deputation of Odd Fellows were present in token of the esteem felt by the lodge for the member who had gone on. - . The pallbearers were.G. G. Byrne, W. C. Byrne, Walter G. Byrne, S. H. Rodgers, Will Barker and George F, Otto. Interment was made In Odd Fellows cemetery.
