    Text Carlton Byrne Family graveside services are pending for Carlton Earley Byrne, a Santa Cruz native, who died Monday at his Pacific Grove home. He was 80. A graduate of Santa Cruz High School, his family owned Byrne Brothers Hardware. Mr.

    Byrne was active in the Los Angeles business community and helped form the Board of Directors of UCLA International Student Center. In the mid 1960's he moved to Watsonville. He was instrumental in starting the Educational Opportunity Program at UCSC in 1974, and was one of the founding members of the UCSC Board of Directors where he was active until 1984. Mr. Byrne was also one of the founders of the Long Marine Lab, the Environmental Studies Program, and the AgroEcology Program.

    He donated several hundred acres of forest land near the Corralitos area to the Santa Cruz County Land Trust. Mr. Byrne was a past member of the Congregational Church. He is survived by his wife, Esther Byrne of Pacific Grove; son, Dr. George M. Byrne of La Canada, sister, Gertrude Stone of Pacific Grove; brother, Howard Byrne of Carmel; and three grandchildren. Family graveside services are under the direction of Arnold's Funeral Home, 1902 Ocean St. Extension. Interment will be in IOOF Cemetery.
